Job Description
The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.
The Strategic Initiatives Bureau (SIB) is the NYPD's central body for research, analysis, and policy development. SIB’s mission is to design and drive long term, enterprise-wide transformation by evaluating policies, programs, and resources, while striving toward maximum organizational efficiency and effectiveness. It serves as a primary advisor to the police commissioner regarding the department's short- and long-term strategic goals. SIB examines new technologies and explores innovative solutions to help the Department to fulfill its primary mission of keeping New York City safe.
The selected candidate will lead a team to help ensure the Department's compliance with data integrity for reporting NIBRS crime data to the FBI, among other state and local entities. In addition, the Executive Director will help establish collaborative relationships with external research partners (e.g., academic institutions, crime labs, etc.) to help the Department stay at the forefront of industry best practices and innovation. This would include the potential of partnering with academic institutions to publish research on issues impacting policing. Lastly, the Executive Director will evaluate internal and external business processes in an effort to automate or shift work. This is envisioned to begin by reviewing the process of crime data requests, such as statuary Clery Act requests received from colleges, with the goal of making the process a self-service model of data production for colleges; thereby, eliminating Department personnel from processing and production of said data requests.
