    The successful candidate will possess a proven track record of delivering results in a high-performance continuous improvement environment through implementation of and expertise with the latest quality management methods.

     

    The VP, Quality, in conjunction with the divisional and local leadership teams, has responsibility for the continued development, promotion and strategically aligned implementation of the company’s quality systems designed to drive world-class results in safety, customer satisfaction, operational excellence, and financial performance. This individual will provide the thought leadership, strategic direction, and tactical implementation leadership for the development and advancement of the Quality Management System across Progress Rail’s Freight Car Services’ divisions.

    Tied to effectiveness of the quality management and continuous improvement system and business operating performance:

    • Set the benchmark for internal and external Quality performance across the Progress Rail Enterprise;

    • *Significant measurable and sustainable improvements in Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost metrics; continue to evolve to appropriate lean metrics;

    • Working with the Divisional and Site Leaders, implementation of highly effective quality & continuous improvement road-maps across the Business Unit;

    • On-going development of continuous improvement capability across the organization;

    • Outstanding audit and external scorecards tied to AAR, ISO, and customer expectations.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Develops, communicates, and implements a product quality strategy that facilitates process improvements, conformance, internal certification, and defect reduction through the implementation of quality systems;

    • Manages high performing teams in the continual development of a quality management system that supports Internal Certification, enhances customer satisfaction through warranty and defect reduction, and is focused on lean manufacturing. Local process owner for the corporate Internal Certification and Supply & Production Quality Initiative, leading the implementation through 6 Sigma projects;

    • Develops, mentors and trains personnel capable of delivering a supplier quality organization that facilitates process improvements, conformance, and defect reduction. Develops, mentors and trains personnel capable of delivering the global supplier strategy for the assigned category. Lead teams to fully understand the requirements and performance of the supply base. Using a 6 Sigma Strategic Sourcing approach, the team will evaluate strategic options; decide a course of action and implement;

    • Formulate, develop, and implement quality strategies to accelerate Reliability improvements to achieve product goals. Develop innovative strategies to reduce and control internal and external cost of poor-quality factors (scrap, rework, warranty, etc.);

    • Manage QMS to ensure facility and operations comply to standards, regulations, customer requirements consistent with company Values;

    • Maintain / Improve the quality culture by developing and deploying a comprehensive quality assurance, continuous improvement, and supplier quality strategy;

    • Participate as a business partner with the operations staff in managing and leading the direction of the business;

    • Support the Rail industry and company through industry committee participation;

    • Provide 6 Sigma and LEAN leadership, change management direction, and guidance in proactively identifying opportunities and removing / eliminating waste and risks;

    • Support / improve the audit function and process across each facility, driving Continuous Improvement opportunities, compliance to AAR standards, ISO certifications and EN standards/certifications;

    • Develop and manage Quality budget and cost controls;

    • Manage SMART Goal and team performance KPI’s.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • 10+ years of experience in manufacturing environments dealing with technically complex rail products and services. It will be a distinct advantage to have managed people and processes in a multi-facility environment given this position’s responsibilities to indirectly influence in order to achieve measurable results. He/she will have earned a reputation for having successfully implemented quality and lean management processes and led the change process;

    • Knowledge of the rail industry and diverse manufacturing processes (Welding, Machining, Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Assembly, etc.);

    • Knowledge and experience with AAR standards, ISO 9001 certification/audits;

    • Extensive experience with ISO, LEAN, Six Sigma, 6S and TQM methodologies;

    • Proven track record of reducing cost of poor quality;

    • Experience driving up first pass yields and reducing scrap / rework;

    • Strong background in lean manufacturing, with experience in leading initiatives and implementing principles into manufacturing processes;

    • Demonstrated analytical ability, having solved complex technical challenges;

    • Proven ability to recruit, train, and motivate a team in order to balance staffing strength with profitability and growth;

    • Experience with ERP systems, Quality Management Software, and Microsoft suite of business tools.
