Responsibilities
The Health Care Systems Engineering team (HSE) at Mayo Clinic is seeking an analyst with the drive, knowledge, collaborative nature and skills to enhance patient and provider experience, improve health and manage or reduce the cost of health care through engineering solutions.
This position will work closely with Dr. Susan Hallbeck at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Hallbeck’s work has focused on innovative ways to keep care providers safely operating and performing medical procedures. Her current work focuses on helping surgeons reduce physical injury from long operations that put a strain on muscles and joints. She and her colleagues also study ways to reduce the mental stress surgeons may experience from surgeries requiring intense concentration
The Healthcare Systems Engineering (HSE) team’s expertise includes:
+ **Ergonomics** - The multidisciplinary team studies physical and cognitive ergonomics and biomechanics to optimize task performance and staff well-being.
+ **Work-system evaluation** - Research team members identify suboptimal workflows and work environments and develop strategies to address these concerns.
+ **Patient and provider safety** - Investigations focus on designing and re-engineering health care delivery operations to optimize patient and provider safety.
+ **Usability** - Research team members design systems that support user needs and assess functionality.
+ **Teamwork** - Research focuses on the performance of clinical teams to identify key characteristics and behaviors that support task performance, patient safety, and staff safety and well-being.
The analyst assists with multidisciplinary research analysis using a variety of analytical, quantitative, qualitative and programming skills. The analyst conducts comprehensive literature searches related to health services research initiatives and compiles and summarizes written and electronic data for research projects. Researches funding sources and collects necessary documents for participating in external research collaborations. Writes draft reports that clearly and concisely summarize and illustrate projects findings, outcomes and results. Drafts sections of grants, abstracts and manuscripts. Collects and assists in designing data analysis strategies, evaluating data needs and methods of data collection. Implements the data collection protocol. Assists in reviewing study methods, statistical models and sampling schemes. Trends data to identify potential areas of the investigation supported by graphical presentations. Evaluates the reliability of data sources to ensure data integrity. Coordinates multiple project assignments and is responsible for completing tasks in given timeline. Designs and maintains quantitative and qualitative databases including the management and updating of data.
This is a limited tenure position currently funded for 1 year. Work will be split approximately 50% remote and 50% on site. Therefore the incumbent must live within a reasonable driving distance of the Rochester campus.

Qualifications
Bachelor degree in health services research, statistics, health economics, engineering, epidemiology and health informatics with strong quantitative and/or qualitative background. Minimum of 4 years of job related experience, or Master's degree with 2 years of job-related experience. Research experience preferred. Experience with previous research projects with quantitative and/or qualitative focus. Competent to work independently in most phases of research analysis, requiring only general instructions and direction. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication and research methodology. Able to think logically and to systematically analyze alternative solutions in problem solving. Knowledgeable about a current health care delivery environment. Experienced in SAS or Stata statistical analysis software and/or qualitative analysis software. Works with general supervision: develops procedures for performance of a variety of duties; performs complex duties within established guidelines.
Preferred requirements and experience:
Pursuing a master’s degree in or Ph.D. in Industrial engineering, Biomedical engineering, Applied psychology with a focus on human factors and ergonomics with a strong quantitative and qualitative background. The position requires observations and data collection in a surgical environment. Preference will be given to those with exposure to research methods and human participant data collection experience, as well as those who are self-directed, adaptable, and demonstrate positive enthusiasm for their work. Previous work experience or coursework in the use of analytic software packages. Possess strong teamwork, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Expected to build and maintain effective collaborative relationships with multidisciplinary team members. Proven written and oral communication abilities are essential.
