    ABOUT THIS POSITION

    At Waystar, our Specialist Application Engineers are passionate about designing and building scalable, high-performance solutions using modern technologies. As a Specialist Application Engineer focused on Java development, you’ll partner closely with Product, QA, and Engineering teams to architect, build, and enhance critical features in our enterprise platform. You’ll play a key role in developing robust backend services and APIs, optimizing application performance, and advancing the scalability and reliability of our systems.

    WHAT YOU'LL DO

    + Participate in the **architecture, design, and development** of complex Java-based enterprise applications

    + Implement and maintain **RESTful APIs** , business logic, and integration components

    + Perform **code reviews** , ensuring adherence to coding standards, security best practices, and software quality

    + Collaborate with cross-functional teams to **analyze business requirements** and translate them into technical solutions

    + Troubleshoot and resolve **application bugs, performance bottlenecks** , and production issues

    + Assist in **refactoring legacy systems** to improve scalability, maintainability, and performance

    + Contribute to the creation and validation of **technical specifications and documentation**

    + Support deployment and release cycles in coordination with QA and Product teams

    + Maintain awareness of industry trends and evaluate new technologies to continuously improve engineering practices

    + Estimate project tasks and provide timely updates to stakeholders using internal project management tools

    + Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing

    WHAT YOU'LL NEED

    + Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

    + **5+ years of professional Java development experience**

    + Deep knowledge of **Java 8+** , Spring/Spring Boot, Hibernate/JPA, and related frameworks

    + Strong understanding of **object-oriented design** , design patterns, and **software architecture principles**

    + Experience working with **SQL databases** , including schema design, stored procedures, and performance tuning (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MS SQL)

    + Solid understanding of **REST API design and implementation**

    + Experience with unit testing frameworks (e.g., **JUnit, Mockito** ) and test-driven development

    + Familiarity with **version control systems** such as Git

    + Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, agile environment

    + Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    + Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems with practical, maintainable solutions
