With the 3rd largest capital program budget in Massachusetts state government, our dynamic team engages in the adaptation of public lands and historic infrastructure to improve climate resiliency, supports critical infrastructure and public works, energy conservation, and stewardship of public works and resources. *Job Opening:* The Department of Conservation and Recreation, seeks applicants for a Contracted Student Interns – Strategic Initiatives Fall 2025 to perform the following duties: Please submit a cover letter and resume as part of the application process. *Position Information:* Contracted Student Interns: Strategic Initiatives Location: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA Start/End Date: 7/27/2025 - 12/13/2025 Salary Rate: $24.00 per hour Weekly Hours: 37.5 hours Number of Openings: 1 position Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis. The student intern will assist in various engineering projects aimed at preserving and enhancing our natural and built environments with DCR’s Division of Design & Engineering. These contracted positions offer a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in construction engineering, facility maintenance, project management, infrastructure management, and design within the realm of conservation. *Position summary:* The Co-op will work as a member of a team to advance strategic initiative under the direction of DCR’s Chief of Design and Engineering. The successful candidate should be familiar with project planning, development and delivery, be able to manage their time effectively and handle multiple tasks at one time, work collaboratively with others, and communicate clearly and effectively, both written and orally. The ability to think critically and strategically and the possession of a strong passion and interest in the field of design and engineering are important attributes for the successful candidate. A successful candidate for this position should be flexible and open to new challenges. *Detailed statement of duties:* * Assist with research, data collection, benchmarking, reviewing deliverables, developing presentations and memos, note-taking and developing meeting summaries, to support the redesign of DCR’s capital planning and project delivery system. * Participate in the development of white papers and Best Management Practices (BMPs) on a variety of topics related to improved capital project delivery. * Actively participate in team strategy sessions and coordinate planning and development of special initiatives such as new management systems, workflows, and operational policies to enhance project delivery and align with the Division’s strategic goals. *Preferred Qualifications:* * Strong communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. * Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment, with multiple competing priorities/projects. * Ability to work effectively in a small and collaborative team environment. * Solution-oriented attitude, with excellent time management and organizational skills; strong attention to detail. * Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Microsoft Excel. * Experience with ArcGIS software, or other GIS software programs a plus. * Education in a design or engineering discipline, and experience, skills and interest in capital project planning, development and implementation a plus. *Benefits:* * Opportunity to work on diverse projects within a dynamic and collaborative environment. * Mentorship from experienced professionals in the field of conservation engineering and management. * Potential for academic credit or professional development opportunities, subject to approval by the intern's educational institution. *First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.* Please see Preferred Qualifications. _*Comprehensive Benefits*_ When you embark on a career with the Commonwealth, you are offered an outstanding suite of employee benefits that add to the overall value of your compensation package.
