Work Unit|Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories
Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories ( VDL ) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( VDL ) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students.
The Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories currently have 16 anatomic pathologists and 8 clinical pathologists active in pathology service activities. Additional resources include diagnostic virologist, microbiologist, and parasitologist faculty. Position Summary
This is an Administrative Professional Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist position at the Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( CSUVDL ) in Fort Collins, Colorado. This is an in-person position. This is a full-time position, and the candidate will be scheduled for service on a daily basis, excluding time off for leave, professional development and other general duties. This position will be scheduled on both biopsy and necropsy service (rotating days, likely with more necropsy service than biopsy service) and will include teaching and training duties for veterinary students and residents.
This position will require after-hours and weekend work, based on caseload and urgent testing or laboratory needs. Weekend work includes 1-2 weekend rotations per month. This is an essential position, and the employee will be required to report to work, without delay, on weather closure days and various holidays throughout the year. This position will be required to report to work for emergency disease response requests and may be required to work significant hours during a disease outbreak detection and response effort or other important diagnostic effort.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; Colorado State University Diagnostic Laboratories will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Job Qualifications
+ A DVM or equivalent degree is required.
+ American College of Veterinary Pathologists ( ACVP ) board certification is required.
+ A license to practice veterinary medicine in Colorado or eligible to obtain a license is required.
Preferred Job Qualifications
+ A minimum of 2 years of experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, post residency, is preferred.
Essential Duties
Job Duty CategoryVeterinary Pathology Services
Duty/Responsibility
+ This position will provide veterinary pathology services to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This will include biopsy and necropsy service. VDL clients include both internal and external submitters and a wide variety of sample types are submitted from all animal species.
+ When on biopsy service, this position will be expected to work up to reading a minimum of 6 biopsy cases per hour (with exceptions for complex cases). Slides can be scanned into digital images for examination or physically reviewed. Total biopsy caseload or the laboratory exceeds 120 cases per day, and this caseload is divided between the on duty pathologists each day. This position may read cases with residents, depending on scheduling between the on duty pathologists.
+ When on necropsy service, this position will be expected to handle the daily caseload (anywhere from 1-15 animals per day), with the help of anatomic pathology residents. During necropsy service, this position will be required to provide education to veterinary students on necropsy rotation and training to veterinary residents. This position will also consult with our branch laboratories to provide necropsy consult services and necropsy histopathology for branch lab cases.
+ Results interpretation will be submitted in the VDL laboratory information management system ( LIMS ) and pathologists are expected to provide case consults to clients, as appropriate. Results are expected to be accurate and timely. This position will be expected to meet all stated VDL turnaround times and provide exceptional customer service to VDL clients. This position will be required to return client contacts and consult with clients promptly, as needed.
+ This position will be expected to positively interact with and support the faculty and staff of the VDL . This position is also expected to positively interact with various internal and external stakeholders, clients, and government personnel, and advance the reputation of the VDL .

Duty/Responsibility
+ This position will be expected to participate in the VDL Quality Management System. Duties include reading and training on standard operating procedures, participating in audits and proficiency testing and completing quality control documents. This position will be expected to detect any case, testing or equipment issues and troubleshoot problems independently. This position will resolve any non-compliant equipment or assay issues and notify the Director of any threats to testing or laboratory quality.

Duty/Responsibility
+ In-state and out of state travel will be required to attend national meetings, trainings, and participate in various laboratory projects and initiatives. It is expected that this position will interface with state and federal stakeholders and national colleagues and continually work to improve and expand on the VDL’s reputation and caseload.
+ This position will help coordinate various special projects for the VDL , which could include projects such as designing testing panels, attending livestock meetings to provide updates on VDL activities, and assisting with strategic initiatives.
