Work Unit|Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories
Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories ( VDL ) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( VDL ) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students.

Position Summary
The Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( CSUVDL ) in Fort Collins, Colorado is seeking applicants for two positions in the Histology Laboratory section. This section provides histology diagnostic services for the VDL . The successful candidate will be employed as a Histology Laboratory Technician II in the CSU Administrative Professional system.
The position is full-time with schedule based on laboratory needs. This schedule can be coordinated as either Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday (typically five eight-hour days). Determination of daily/weekly schedule is based on current section needs.
This position has essential employee status. Due to the nature of the department’s work, this is a fully in-person position located at the Diagnostic Medical Center, Fort Collins, CO.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; Colorado State University Diagnostic Laboratories will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Required Job Qualifications
+ A bachelor’s degree in biology or a related science field.
+ Two years of experience working in a diagnostic, pathology or histopathology laboratory are required.
+ The applicant should be responsible and able to work both independently and in a team environment.
Preferred Job Qualifications
+ Histotechnician and Histotechnologist certification (HT/ HTL ) are preferred. Opportunities to prepare for HT/ HTL certification will be provided to candidates with a bachelor’s degree and documented experience in histology laboratory operations.
+ Histology experience with animal or human tissues is preferred.
+ Effective communication skills as evidenced by submitted written materials.

+ The employee will perform daily operations in the Histology sections of the CSUVDL .
+ Daily diagnostic operations include loading of histology cassettes into the histology processor, embedding of processed tissue, sectioning paraffin blocks on a microtome and placing the selected section on a slide, preparing slides for routine staining, special stains and immunohistochemistry.
+ The diagnostic caseload averages 400 – 600 slides per day. This requires each technician to individually handle a minimum caseload of 90-120 slides per day.
+ Additional activities may include maintenance of laboratory inventory, routine equipment preventive maintenance, preparation of reagents and changing reagents for the H&E stainer, working with the laboratory manager to resolve any non-compliant equipment issues and training of other support staff and/or student workers.
+ The employee will work with the laboratory manager to evaluate current testing and sample preparation protocols and develop and validate alternative/new histology techniques.

+ The employee will participate in the CSU - VDL quality control and various CSU safety programs.
