What is a Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician?

+ Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Technicians play a vital role in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care while supporting essential department services in line with established policies and procedures. Working closely under the guidance of nurses and physicians, they contribute to maintaining the highest standards of patient care. Their responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks, including assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning patients, as well as monitoring blood glucose levels and vital signs. In addition, they perform critical clinical functions like simple wound care, EKGs, bladder scans, and specimen collection. Their work ensures a seamless and high-quality experience for patients throughout their care journey.

What is 10S?

+ 10 South at UPMC Montefiore is a 30-bed acuity-adaptable medical unit specializing in stepdown and telemetry care. We handle a broad spectrum of general medical cases and also manage overflow from orthopedics, ENT, hepatology, urology, and abdominal transplant services. This collaborative, team-oriented unit provides care for a diverse patient population with varying levels of acuity, making it an excellent environment to enhance one's inpatient experience and clinical expertise.

Our career ladder includes Nursing Assistant > Patient Care Technician > Senior/Specialist Patient Care Technician > Lead Patient Care Technician.

Job title and salary will be based upon qualifications and career ladder requirements. The entry level hourly rate is $18.40.

+ Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program or Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.

+ Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.

+ Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

+ Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

+ Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

+ **Nursing Assistant:**

+ High school diploma or equivalent.

+ **Patient Care Technician:**

+ High school diploma or equivalent.

+ 1 year of healthcare experience, OR completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing or PT/OT/PA program or related health care training, OR completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

+ **Patient Care Technician – Senior:**

+ High school diploma or equivalent.

+ 2 years of healthcare experience, OR 1 year of experience plus completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing or PT/OT/PA program or related health care training, OR 1 year of experience and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

+ Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire.

+ Successful completion of Senior training class.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

+ CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

+ Act 34
