The Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for an Application Developer/Analyst Lead position on our central IT team.
The Application Developer/Analyst Lead is a senior-level technical leader responsible for architecting, developing, and sustaining mission-critical financial and clinical reporting systems for the Department of Medicine (DoM). This role ensures the integrity, availability, and strategic alignment of critical data assets, enabling accurate reporting, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. It serves as the technical lead for modernizing legacy systems, integrating data across platforms, and delivering tools that empower decision-makers.
This position requires a strategic thinker with deep technical expertise, capable of leading complex development initiatives, modernizing legacy systems, and aligning data infrastructure with institutional goals. The Lead Developer will collaborate with executive stakeholders, clinical leadership, and IT governance to ensure data-driven decision-making and operational excellence across the department.
This role requires managing and modernizing a diverse ecosystem of legacy and modern data systems while ensuring seamless integration and minimal disruption. It involves collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders from clinical providers to IT and finance leaders requiring both technical fluency and strategic communication. The position demands strict adherence to data security and compliance standards, especially when handling sensitive clinical and financial information. It balances the dual responsibility of innovating new solutions while maintaining mission-critical legacy systems that directly impact revenue and operations. Additionally, the role must remain agile and responsive to institutional changes, adapting systems and processes to align with evolving technologies and organizational priorities.
This position plays a critical role in supporting the Department of Medicine’s financial and clinical operations, directly influencing the university’s largest revenue-generating activities. It serves as a key bridge between departmental systems and enterprise-level data infrastructure, ensuring alignment with UW’s institutional standards and strategic goals. The role requires handling sensitive data with the highest level of security and compliance, contributing to the university’s risk management and regulatory responsibilities. As a technical leader, the position shapes development practices and innovation within the department, while also collaborating with central IT and analytics teams. Ultimately, it supports UW’s broader mission in healthcare, education, and research by enabling data-driven decision-making and operational excellence.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** 60% - Clinical Reporting Systems Management
+ Serve as the principal architect and technical authority for the department’s clinical reporting platforms.
+ Lead the modernization of legacy systems (Access, FileMaker Pro) through strategic migration to scalable, enterprise-grade SQL environments.
+ Spearhead the design and development of the next-generation Clinical Activity Tracking (CAT) platform, integrating advanced web technologies and robust data pipelines.
+ Ensure data integrity, availability, and operational resilience through the implementation of automated process monitoring, integrity checks, and versioning strategies.
+ Oversee the development and execution of comprehensive backup, recovery, and archival strategies in partnership with systems administrators.
+ Lead efforts within DoM business units to ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory data retention standards.
+ Act as the primary liaison between the DoM and upstream UW Medicine data providers, advocating for data enhancements that align with departmental goals.
+ Collaborate with clinical and administrative leaders to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions.
+ Provide mentorship and technical leadership to a four-person DOM IT development team, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
+ Support the revenue cycle team with high-impact, ad-hoc analytics and reporting from UW Medicine EMR systems and enterprise data warehouses.
+ Maintain and enhance ETL processes to ensure timely and accurate data delivery across clinical and financial domains.
+ Review compliance-related data issues and appeals, ensuring accuracy and adherence to institutional policies.20% - Application & Database Development
+ Direct the design, development, and lifecycle management of critical departmental systems, including the Departmental Analysis/Reports Tool (DART), Commitments Tracking, and RFA faculty recruitment platforms. Ensure alignment with evolving financial and operational goals.
+ Oversee the architecture, administration, and optimization of SQL Server, FileMaker Pro, and Access databases. Establish and maintain data models, enforce data integrity standards, and ensure high availability and performance across systems in partnership with systems administrators.
+ Architect and maintain robust ETL pipelines to integrate data from institutional sources. Deliver high-impact financial and operational reporting solutions that support strategic decision-making and compliance requirements.
+ Serve as a key liaison between IT and administrative leadership. Provide consultative support, training, and technical guidance to divisional and central staff to maximize the value of developed tools and systems.
+ Lead efforts to extract, transform, and preserve data from legacy platforms. Develop internal utilities to streamline IT operations, including billing, user management, and reporting automation.
+ Ensure the reliability and resilience of mission-critical applications through proactive monitoring, maintenance, and on-call support for urgent issues and outages.10% - Training and Development
+ Work with members within the department to provide guidance on data management projects to help ensure successful outcomes and adherence to best practices.
+ Mentor and train departmental analysts and developers on best practices in data architecture, security, and application development.
+ Promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation through technical workshops and collaborative development practices.
+ Partner with divisional leaders to assess and address evolving documentation and billing needs.10% - Other
+ Provide technical leadership and application support to other departments within the School of Medicine.
+ Contribute to special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
+ A minimum of 4 years related work experience to include 2+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server or similar RDBMS. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Expert in databases, web/app development, and security.
+ Strong SQL admin and query optimization skills.
+ Proficient in Windows OS (workstation/server).
+ Advanced Excel functionality (PivotTables, graphics, automation).
+ Experience with PowerShell, Python, bash.
+ Skilled in C# MVC, HTML5, CSS, JS, Angular, AJAX.
+ Power BI report development.
+ MS Access with VBA, ADODB, SQL Server.
+ SharePoint API integration.
+ App deployment packaging (Windows).
+ LDAP/Active Directory, SSO/SAML.
+ Git.
+ .NET Interop, task schedulers, message queues. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Secure development certifications.
+ FileMaker Pro/Server.
+ Experience working with BusinessObjects, EPIC SlicerDicer, EPIC EMR.
+ Experience with mobile app development, UI/UX design.
+ Experience with C# console apps, embedded JS, Lua.
+ Experience with web scripting languages (i.e. Python, PHP web scripting).
+ Knowledge of ActiveX, Microsoft Exchange APIs.
+ Workday (HR/finance data). **CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT**
+ The Lead Developer will be given access to confidential patient care and employee data. They will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement with the University and help maintain the security and integrity of the revenue cycle systems.
