    Caterpillar Switchgear, part of the Electric Power Division, currently has an opening in Alpharetta, Georgia for a **Performance/Simulation/** **A** **pplications Engineer** with a focus on low and medium voltage switchgear layout and controls for Caterpillar generators.

    What You Will Do:

    + Review specifications, proposals, estimates, and other contract documents to develop submittal packages consisting of drawings and BOMs.

    + Create preliminary designs for switchgear and generator control systems.

    + Finalize power envelope designs for medium and low voltage systems.

    + Design protective relaying schemes for switchgear.

    + Support inside and outside sales team members with technical solutions and guidance.

    + Support production engineers for successful transition from submittals to production.

    + Work with consultants and customers to gain production approval on submittal packages.

    + Interpret customer specifications and drawings and have in-depth dealer/consultant interaction.

    + Present clear detailed designs for production engineers to execute.

    + Research new part requirements, read manuals and contact vendors to ensure successful implementation.

    What You Will Have:

    **Technical Excellence:** Working knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

    + Experience in the design of low and medium voltage switchgear.

    + Detailed understanding of protective relays, their functions, and proper applications.

    + Basic understanding of PLC / SCADA communications networks and protocols.

    + Detailed understanding of NEC, UL, ANSI and other standards.

    + Basic understanding of generator controls and limitations.

    **Accuracy and Attention to Detail** : Working knowledge and understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision.

    + Accurately gauges the impact and cost of errors, omissions, and oversights.

    + Utilizes specific approaches and tools for checking and cross-checking outputs.

    + Reviews documents produced by team to verify accuracy with customer requirements.

    + Develops and uses checklists to ensure that information goes out error-free.

    **Analytical Thinking** : Working knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

    + Approaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue and determining its significance.

    + Makes a systematic comparison of two or more alternative solutions.​

    + Balances technical capabilities, costs, and timelines to put forward profitable and buildable solutions that meet customer requirements.

    **Effective Communications:** Working knowledge and understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

    + Delivers helpful feedback that focuses on behaviors without offending the recipient.

    + Makes convincing arguments to customers that the CAT solutions are effective and should be implemented.

    + Avoids technical jargon when inappropriate.

    + Composes correspondence for technical issues that succinctly describe the challenges, potential solutions, and implications for delayed response.

    **Problem Solving:** Extensive experience and working knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.

    + Ensures capture of lessons to be learned from a problem-solving effort.

    + Organizes potential problem solvers and leads problem resolution efforts.

    + Uses varying problem-solving approaches and techniques as appropriate.

    + Contributes to standard practices for problem-solving approaches, tools, and processes.

    + Analyzes and synthesizes information and devises alternative resolution strategies.

    + Develops successful resolutions to critical or wide-impact problems.

    **Computer-Aided Design & Engineering:** Working knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test product design drafts.

    + Reuses standard blocks via reusable libraries following standard procedures.

    + Uses CAD to perform basic tasks such as updating cross-references or changing parameters of a block.

    + Performs routine changes to computerized schematics or drawings.

    Top Candidates Will Have:

    + Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET)

    + Experience with Caterpillar generator sets

    + Experience with AutoCAD Electrical

    + Experience controlling multiple generators which parallel to one or more utilities

    Additional Information:

    + This position is located in Alpharetta, Georgia and does not offer relocation

    + Position requires travel, typically 10%-15, to help support sales staff

    Summary Pay Range:

    $95,640.00 - $143,520.00

     

    Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
