    About the Team:

    The Global Risk, Safety and Resilience (GRSR) team manages our operational risks and advises the business on other commercial, strategic or reputational challenges. With functions covering audits and investigations, business resilience (incident and crisis management, business continuity), digital risk, event security, global operations and insights, health, safety and wellness, newsroom safety, executive protection and workplace security. We cover a diverse technical portfolio leveraged to ensure risks are reasonably managed, security threats addressed and disruptions limited to support Dow Jones' strategic goals.

     

    About the Role

     

    The _Vice President, Newsroom Safety & Resilience_ is a senior role providing practice area leadership and expertise to manage risk and safety and wellbeing promotion across our newsrooms. In addition to supporting our journalists, you will involve addressing high-risk exposure driven by business requirements around the world. This is a hybrid role based at our headquarters office in midtown Manhattan with extensive travel driven by critical events and safety responsibilities - expected up to 30% of the year.

     

    The risks our business faces are unique and require a range of well-calibrated solutions - proactively and comprehensively - and well attuned to the varying contexts of our work. Reporting to the global head of risk, security & resilience, and collaborating closely with departmental colleagues, leaders, newsrooms, vendors and other key stakeholders, we are looking for a broad and proven track record of capably addressing risks and implementing best practices while enabling business and newsgathering goals. This includes having a firm grasp of environmental factors and information-led risk planning and extensive knowledge of cyber/digital threats and austere or high risk operating environments.     You Will:

    + Devise, implement, oversee and innovative high-risk safety doctrine across the organization and ensure policies, programs and procedures are effectively applied.

    + Exploit technology - hardware, platforms, systems and tools - to devise, implement, improve and strengthen practices in line with an evolving risk environment.

    + Ensure relevant training content is developed, delivered and constantly refined to ensure our people are capable of meeting a wide range of present and emerging risks.

    + Be the key interlocutor across all newsrooms to:

    + Engage and manage media-specific risks and directly address or advise newsroom leadership on effective mitigation strategies.

    + Lead or promote relevant wellbeing and safety initiatives.

    + Deliver a regime of effective training for journalists and others that may participate in high-risk activities.

    + Communicate plans and key initiates and collect feedback and requirements.

    + Deploy to high-risk environments to assess infrastructure, business behaviors and safety/security practices or to provide on-the-ground incident management.

    + Oversee the identification, recruitment and deployment of high risk advisors supporting our people directly in the field. Administrative and financial oversight of contractors is a key element of the position.

    + Develop reports/briefings and answer information requests relevant to high-risk activities and newsroom safety for internal and external stakeholders.

    + Drive key elements of the resource management cycle; needs assessments, vendor identification and engagement, budget planning to budget oversight.

    + Forge exceptional relationships with people across the company and its publications. Provide a source of sound judgement, advice and counsel to staff, freelancers, and decision makers on risk, security and operational challenges.

    + Contribute proactively or when engaged to all relevant best practices adopted by the risk and resilience department; plan and process improvement, risk mitigation and responding to new challenges.

    + Play a key role supporting incident management through aggressive, timely and proactive intervention, coordination, information provision and problem solving while providing compassionate and reasoned support to those involved.

    + Participate in industry working groups and follow trends in risk management and digital and physical security, the threat landscape (especially as it relates to media companies), best practices and solutions, available technologies and service providers.

    You Have:

    + 15+ years experience applying risk management, security and training solutions in challenging safety and security situations and/or in austere, less-developed or conflict environments. Your knowledge comes from first-hand experience.

    + A mission-focused attitude committed to implementing solutions and willing to work an often irregular schedule and dive into ambiguous and challenging situations.

    + Critical thinking skills and are able to understand complex situations and provide innovative, contemporary and unique solutions.

    + A collegial, dynamic and proactive sense of collaboration with a desire for continuous learning, development and career growth.

    + An interest in global events and have a good understanding of how social/political/conflict dynamics can affect risk.

    + Strong verbal and written communication skills - you must be able to brief and influence effectively and translate complex technical concepts into understandable terms. Careful information sharing is critical as is tailoring your communications style for various audiences.

    + A keen ability to work successfully in a matrixed organization working with other practice leads to influence outcomes and ensure the constant improvement of high risk-related best practice.

    + The ability to multi-task with regards to communications and coordination, research, operational planning and logistics, and administrative tasks.

    + Successfully handled incidents, crises and emergency situations - from identification and support to review and analysis. This includes communicating with leaders and working with all stakeholders to ensure business resilience.

     

    Preferred Qualities

     

    + Experience working in a media organization - being familiar with the relationship between newsgathering, risk and digital/physical safety.

    + A broad understanding of the challenges faced by journalists, business travelers, the media and international business organizations across all regions and jurisdictions.

    + A strong background in risk management frameworks and technology platform utilization.
