    Job Description

    The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

     

    The NYC DOC has a unique opportunity for an LGBTQ+ Coordinator within the Division of Programs and Community Partnerships (DPCP). This Division provides a variety of programs and services to support incarcerated men and women during their incarceration and upon release. One of its goals is to provide affirming support to the LGBTQ+ people in our custody. Reporting to the Executive Director of LGBTQ+ Affairs, the selected candidate’s responsibilities will include but are not limited the following:

     

    - Provide individualized 1:1 support to the LGBTQ+ people in custody, which includes regularly scheduled tours within designated facilities;

     

    - Facilitate group programming tailored specifically for incarcerated LGBTQ+ people;

     

    - Develop and oversee LGBTQ+ facility wide events for the people in custody within designated facilities.

     

    - Prepare reports and materials for briefings with external and internal stakeholders;

     

    - Assist facility-based staff in addressing concerns and matters regarding LGBTQ+ people in custody;

     

    - Assist Counselors and other Programs staff with individual case plans;

     

    - Collaborate with Department staff to implement Correctional Best Practices for LGBTQ+ people in custody;

     

    - Provide supportive and affirming re-entry resources and referrals for LGBTQ+ people in custody;

     

    - Foster partnerships with community-based organizations to expand services for LGBTQ+ people in custody;

     

    - Assist in the coordination of gender affirming housing for transgender-nonconforming/non-binary people in custody upon their transfers to other correctional institutions

     

    - Attend training sessions, workshops, and staff meetings to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities;

     

    - Prepare reports and materials for briefings with external and internal stakeholders;

     

    - Perform related duties as assigned.

     

    Preferred Skills

     

    - 3+ years of related experience in working with the LGBTQ+ Community;

     

    - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of correctional staff;

     

    - Ability to exercise independent judgment, prepare written reports and documents;

     

    - Knowledge of counseling techniques, behavior modification and intervention techniques;

     

    - Ability to mentor and provide positive interaction, guidance and leadership to adult inmate populations;

     

    - Excellent writing, communication, inter-personal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

    Qualifications

    1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

    2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

    3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

    Salary Min: $ 62,868.00
