Job Summary
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.
This position will conduct research in support of laboratory, data, and field work in Dr. Eidam’s Coastal Sediments Lab. This position is primarily designed to support a current research project focused on intertidal flat sedimentation, which includes recurring field work trips throughout the year to tidal flats in Florida, New Jersey, Oregon, Alaska, and similar locations as well as possible international sites. Work also includes laboratory analyses and laboratory oversight/student supervision, as well as basic data analysis and archival using a common coding platform like Matlab or Python. The incumbent will be expected to be able to work independently as well as in a team with the PI, students, and collaborators to accomplish project and lab goals. Occasional outreach work with K-12 students may also be included.

Key Responsibilities
25% – Field work and logistics
30% – Data processing and first-order analysis
30% – Lab work and supervision
15% – Lab supervision and maintenance
What You Will Need
+ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in earth science, engineering, or related field and one year of work experience in science or technology.
+ Minimum of 2 years of experience working with Matlab and/or Python to do data processing
+ Minimum of 1 year of experience doing laboratory-type work
+ Strong communication and organizational skills, including ability to log data and communicate project progress
+ Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage respectfully and professional with individuals from a range of backgrounds and experiences
+ Demonstrated ability to work independently, including ability to make decisions to move projects forward
+ Demonstrating experience in presenting scientific findings (e.g., through honors theses, poster presentations, publications) and to clearly communicate scientific concepts, findings, and results for a variety of audiences
+ Demonstrated ability to work in field settings
+ Valid passport at the time of employment or have the means and eligibility to obtain one within one year of hire date
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
+ Master’s degree in earth, engineering, or related fieldOR2 years experience working in a science or technical field
+ Wilderness First Aid certification
+ Small boat operator certification (state boating license) and experience operating small boats
+ Experience supervising students and/or staff
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This job requires occasional evening and/or weekend work to support field programs. Travel (some international) may be required for up to 3-8 weeks per year. Incumbent may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 50 lb and work in inclement weather at remote sites.
