ABOUT JOHN JAY COLLEGE
John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. Led by President Karol V. Mason, John Jay is a federally designated Hispanic-serving institution, it is ranked third in the nation in Black student success, and it is a top ten institution for promoting student social mobility. POSITION OVERVIEW
My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) is an initiative launched by President Barack Obama in 2014 to ensure that men of color reach their full potential. Conceived by John Jay College President Karol V. Mason in partnership with the Obama Foundation, MBK Connect represents the inaugural endeavor to advance the fundamental principles of MBK in higher education. This groundbreaking initiative is intentionally designed to increase academic preparedness, retention, and educational outcomes and continued success throughout the collegiate journey.
Guided by John Jay’s commitment to justice and student success, the MBK Connect is a program designated for Men of Color either in their first two years or first transfer semester. MBK students enter into a brotherhood rooted in personal and group academic success, intellectual and social enrichment, and the exploration of professional opportunities in preparation for careers of consequence. This program fosters their development, from MBK Student to MBK Scholar, as they flourish into empowered, motivated, and equity minded leaders who hold themselves accountable to improving the well-being of themselves, their families, and their communities.
Reporting to the Director of Urban Male Student Success Programs, the MBK Specialist will:
+ Develop and coordinate efforts to provide a comprehensive structured mentoring program.
+ Hire, train, and supervise personnel, peer advocates and student aides.
+ Supervise planning and implementation of student individual development plans.
+ Collaborate with campus colleagues and offices to provide consistently reliable information to students to enhance student performance and retention.
+ Develop programs that meet the needs of students within the MBK program.
+ Develop and administer student progress reports in collaboration with faculty.
+ Assess and monitor retention and graduation trends for students enrolled in the structured mentoring program.
+ Write and submit reports and deliverables as required.
+ Assess data trends and use evidence-based practices to increase retention and graduation rates for men of color enrolled at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
+ In coordination with the Director, the specialist will be responsible for all aspects of fiscal management of the MBK operating budget, including forecasting expenditures and revenues, maintaining records, and linking program objectives and assessment to the annual budget process.
+ Manage MBK programming operations (space reservations, facilities work orders, helpdesk, audiovisual work orders).
+ Maintain and publish program content and calendar to promote events and services in order to maximize student involvement.
+ Manage student crisis and emergencies to support student concerns in collaboration with appropriate departments.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Earned master’s degree in a related field preferred
+ Experience managing peer mentor programs
+ Experience managing affinity group programs preferred
+ Experience working with students in crisis
+ Experience collaborating with academic and student support departments/programs a plus
+ Must have excellent critical thinking, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to use discretionary judgment, excellent problem solving, leadership, time management, budget management and presentation skills
+ Well-developed skills using MS Office/MS 365 (including Excel and MS Teams)
+ Experience with PeopleSoft (CUNY First) and EAB Navigate a plus
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
- Develops and implements programming, services, and learning opportunities for students, promoting the personal development of a diverse student population.
- Administers one or more student affairs programs, providing program management, assistance with policy development, supervision and training of all professional and support staff, budget monitoring, and report preparation
- Serves as a resource to student groups and/or populations as a consultant and advocate for their concerns
- Researches and stays current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student impact
- Produces workshops and materials to support student programs; manages on-line communities; develops on-line social networking activities, and develops and maintains multimedia content on program web sites
- Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$62,411 - $68,004
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
