    Summary This position is the Maintenance Work Leader "Grounds Manager", located in Facility Management Service (FMS), Boise VA Medical Center Boise, Idaho. Responsibilities Duties include but not limited to: The Maintenance Work Leader is responsible for leading and mentoring 3 FTE's and 3 fulltime compensated work therapy workers. The leader will work and train from sketches, work orders, basic blueprints, and instructions which illustrate job requirements, materials, and methods to be used. The leader frequently operates towed or attached equipment from the seat of the tractor through hydraulic or mechanical controls. Examples of equipment operated at this level are mowers, aerators, plows, harrows, chippers, sprayers, disks, post-hole diggers, front-end loading devices, movable dozer blades, and backhoes. He/she will perform and train subordinates in operator maintenance on tractors and equipment. The incumbent will demonstrate woodworking techniques and basic shop mathematics and skills in the usage of measuring tapes, squares, levels, and other carpentry tools used to plan, lay out, measure, cut, construct and install materials according to dimensional requirements and specifications. He/she will demonstrate a working knowledge of material strengths and applications. The work leader demonstrates skill and train subordinates in the use and operation of a variety of hand and/or power tools such as; hammers, hand saws, drills, planes, routers, screwdrivers, nail guns, fasteners, glue guns, metal shears, screw guns, power saws, and power sanders, and planes. The incumbent will lead the repair of benches, partitions, frames, and tables, floors, sidewalks, roads, flower beds, roofing, irrigation systems, and wheelchairs. The work leader will mentor employees and CWT workers in the proper record keeping and handling of all Medical Center generated hazardous/medical waste and recycling materials. The work leader will coordinate all Green Environmental Management Systems (GEMS) activities with the station GEMS coordinator. The work leader will be trained and become component as a Contracting Officers Representative (COR) for the purpose of managing maintenance contracts. The contract duties include; grounds maintenance (turf,) hazardous/medical waste disposal, snow removal, and grounds improvement. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:30a.m. - 4:00p.m. MST Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker Leader/PD606440 Physical Requirements: The Maintenance Work Leader "Grounds Manger" performs normal tasks requiring moderate physical exertion, including frequent medium lifting (up to 50 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and negotiating confined spaces. Heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion is occasionally necessary. The incumbent will require the ability to work in a variety of work sites, including, roofs, scaffolds, crawl spaces, ladders, etc. The employee must be able to distinguish colors. The employee is standing or walking most of the time. Working Conditions: The working conditions vary with the environment. It may be inside or outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, greasy, and may be in inclement weather. The incumbent is continually exposed to the open flame of torches used to cut, braze, and solder pipe. Electrical shock is a real and present danger in the performance of this job. The incumbent may be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and /or chemical agents are present. The incumbent will be exposed to raw sewage of a hospital that carries every disease of the patients it serves. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualification for duty. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates and hours worked per week. Preferred Experience: Several years of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or a related field. This includes tasks such a mowing, trimming, planting, watering, and fertilizing. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
