    Job Description:

    The Russ College of Engineering and Technology’s Avionics Engineering Center at Ohio University seeks a full-time Senior Research Program Engineer. This grant-funded position is intended to begin July 1, 2025.

     

    This position secures and executes technical projects and programs as a research team leader in the Center. The position secures funding for and directs a team of full-time program engineers, associate program engineers, senior research engineers, research engineers and technicians as well as undergraduate and graduate students in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Computer Science, who work on sponsored research programs with the Center. The position helps assure the quality and timeliness of the Center’s technical products and provides general assistance to the Center’s Director/Associate Director/Assistant Director, as required, in matters with current and potential governmental and industrial sponsors, and with the various research/engineering organizations with which the Center has or may have a contractual, cooperative agreement or grant relationship. This position plays a critical role in sustaining the Center by promoting major research programs and securing external research funding.

    The Senior Research Program Engineer is responsible for the following functions:

    1. Promotes and secures major research programs for the Avionics Engineering Center; maintains contact with program/project sponsors, makes follow up marketing contacts as directed, with potential sponsors in government and industry. Acts as the Principal Investigator on many multi-year, multi-million dollar grants and sponsorships.

    2. Assumes project management responsibilities as necessary and desirable; supervises daily project activities; directs the application of theory to obtain practical solutions to aviation problems; develops project outlines and schedules which include current and proposed research activities; and ensures deliverable items are provided on schedule and within budget; serves as a member of the Center’s Strategic Planning and Advisory Committee; leads/participates in planning activities to define project objectives/products, work statements, and resource requirements as a basis of budget/cost estimates.

    3. Supervises the work of a team of senior research engineers, research engineers, technicians, and student interns in executing project tasks by applying experience and knowledge to aid in the idea-generation, learning and communications processes; supervises the associate program engineers and program engineers who supervise smaller groups within the research team; conducts annual evaluations of the staff members on his/her team and provides that information to the Director.

    4. Plans technical tasks, conducts ground and airborne data collection and data reduction/analysis, and documents technical results as required by contractual work statements; Originates/contributes to technical memoranda and formal technical reports in accordance with project requirements, and as necessary to document the engineering processed used and rationale thus ensuring the integrity and reputation of the Avionics Engineering Center, the Russ College and the University; prepares and participates in project review activities typically held at the sponsor’s location.

    5. Presents research results to the Avionics community at national/international conferences, meetings, and workshops as required by project work statements; Publishes research results in refereed journals and proceedings in accordance with sponsor’s objectives; provides periodic information to Center management, research engineers, and others, as appropriate to assure milestone/product timeliness and to maintain awareness of project technical and financial status.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    1. Doctorate in Electrical Engineering or a related field

    2. 8 years or more direct work experience in sponsored avionics research

    3. 8 years or more of related managerial experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Demonstrated success in securing major sponsored research funding in the field of avionics

    2. Significant project management experience (6-+)

    3. Successful record of publication in refereed journals and presentation at national/international conferences
