Description

The Junior Accountant will play a key role in ensuring accurate financial records and reporting. This position is responsible for analyzing financial data, reconciling accounts, preparing journal entries, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, the Staff Accountant will collaborate closely with colleagues across departments to maintain compliance with accounting standards and contribute to process improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

+ General Ledger Maintenance: Prepare and record routine and non-routine journal entries, ensuring the integrity of the general ledger.

+ Account Reconciliation: Perform monthly reconciliations of balance sheet accounts and research discrepancies.

+ Financial Reporting: Assist in preparing and analyzing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to present to leadership.

+ Budget Monitoring: Collaborate with departments to monitor budgets, review variances, and provide recommendations for cost control.

+ Compliance: Ensure adherence to accounting policies and standards, including GAAP, and support audits with detailed documentation.

+ Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and systems to improve efficiency and accuracy.

+ Cross-Department Collaboration: Partner with cross-functional teams such as accounts payable, payroll, and grant departments to ensure smooth financial operations.

Requirements

Qualifications:

+ Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

+ Experience: 2+ years of relevant accounting experience; public accounting experience or prior work in higher education/nonprofit settings is a plus.

+ Technical Skills: Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Oracle, SAP, Workday) and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, v-lookups, etc.).

+ Knowledge: Familiarity with GAAP standards and a demonstrated ability to apply them in daily accounting functions.

+ Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to identify and resolve financial discrepancies effectively.

+ Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
