    Research Development Associate

    Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

    Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in biomedical sciences, engineering sciences, natural or physical sciences, or a related field, and four (4) years of full-time research experience and/or grant/proposal experiences OR Masters degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and two (2) years of full-time research experience and/or grant/proposal experience. Highly proficient, professional experience in spreadsheet management, data collection, and data presentation using Microsoft and Google tools.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    PhD (or foreign equivalent) in physical sciences or a related field. Experience in grant writing or in supporting the technical or administrative aspects of an external grant application. Experience conducting research (research experience as part of a doctoral training program will be considered). Experience submitting proposals to federal sponsors such as NSF, NIH, DOD, and DOE. Experience with data analysis. Experience writing, editing and/or producing written content for publications or grant applications. Experience working in a higher education or academic medical setting. Presentation experience. Event coordination experience.

    Brief Description of Duties:

    The Office of Proposal Development is one of seven units within the OVPR, whose mission is to support Stony Brook’s research and scholarly community in its pursuit of extramural funding by fostering collaborations with partners.

     

    The successful candidate will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and will exercise strong organizational skills with an exceptional attention to detail. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential for this role. A successful candidate will be comfortable undertaking a collaborative approach to problem solving and should be capable of effectively multi-tasking in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with a high degree of accuracy and organization. The successful candidate will have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Research Development Associate will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills. It is essential for the Research Development Associate to have strong verbal and written communication skills for a broad range of audiences. Along with the basic understanding of university operations and the Higher Education landscape in the United States. The successful incumbent will have demonstrated leadership experience which exhibits a marked sense of initiative and flexibility to work on projects outside of scientific expertise. They will also possess a strong understanding of opportunities for scientific research to support a broad range of policy decisions, and possess an interest in applying technical expertise to relevant societal issues.

     

    A general description of the duties and responsibilities of Research Development Associates is below.

    • **Support efforts to facilitate external partnerships for research faculty:**

    • Identify potential research partners and manage outreach to both internal and external stakeholders

    • Plan and facilitate events to introduce Stony Brook researchers to potential industry and academic partners

    • Coordinate programs that will strengthen existing partnerships with external groups and prepare Stony Brook researchers for more successful collaborations in the future

    • Understand the research strengths and collaborative needs of Stony Brook faculty, as well as determine best options to address gaps in research expertise

    • Analyze funding priorities of the federal government and facilitate collaborative efforts that will better position Stony Brook for forecasted opportunities

    • **Support special research development initiatives:**

    • Manage communications with key faculty members and the broader research community

    • Provide administrative support to ensure that task force members have the necessary resources to move research initiatives forward

    • Attend regular meetings with faculty and administration

    • Lead the planning and execution of assigned events (both virtual and in-person)

    • Lead the progress reporting and analysis of research development initiatives to share with university leadership

    • Clearly communicate the outcomes of research development initiatives through written reports and presentations

    • Collaborate with faculty on proposals through the following activities: conducting literature reviews, ensuring the proposed research aligns with federal funding priorities, analyzing gaps in the research team and taking the lead on bridging those gaps with internal and external partnership development, other research and team development activities as needed per project

    • **Other duties as assigned**

    Special Notes:

    The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
