Job Information
Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This position is represented by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF)- Local 1264 and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the IAFF.
DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Fire Department
HOURS OF WORK: Various due to 24-hour operations
LOCATION OF WORK: 1301 E 80th Ave Anchorage, AK 99518

Example of Duties
Responsible for performing a variety of journeyman level emergent and non-emergent radio dispatches and providing assistance and information to the public for the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) Communications Center. Able to work independently, use sound judgement and action within defined policies and procedures to decide priority of calls, when emergency personnel should be dispatched, and determine the level of response required.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, and three (3) years of experience which involve a substantial amount of public contact and office clerical duties and one (1) year of public safety dispatching experience.
OR
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, and three (3) years of experience which involve a substantial amount of public contact and office clerical duties and one (1) year of experience receiving calls, analyzing situations, gathering and providing information for response to critical incidents, and taking appropriate action to respond.
All applicants must possess and/or complete:
+ Must pass a typing test at 35 WPM at time of application.
+ Emergency Medical Dispatching Certification within one (1) year of hire.
+ American Red Cross/American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification or equivalent – Professional Level within one (1) year of hire.
+ Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check at time of hire.
Pre-employment Requirements:
+ Satisfactory criminal history background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history.
+ Satisfactory psychological assessment (determines job suitability).
+ Satisfactory audiological examination.
NOTE: In order to be considered, official certification of ability to type 35 WPM (current within the past (1) year) MUST be attached to the application. Documentation or certification results must clearly indicate the applicant's name and date.

Testing Information:
Successful applicants will be invited to test.
Testing will consist of successfully passing the CritiCall Computerized test. All testing is strictly pass/fail.

If selected for hire, appointment to this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory passing a Criminal History Background Check, an Audiological Examination, a written Psychological Assessment and Interview to determine job suitability.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position requires Criteria Based Dispatching (CBD) Certification, CATALYST, and American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR or Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR Certification within one (1) year of hire. If the individual selected for this position fails to obtain these certifications within one (1) year of hire, he/she will be terminated.
All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
Military Service Interview Preference : Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
