Job Description Summary:
The Senior Director of Design and Construction leads, manages, and executes design and construction services across the entire OhioHealth system.
Overall Accountabilities
• Create and manage a business that delivers OhioHealth capital funded building projects on time and within budget, within minimal disruption.
• Foster a culture of customer service focused on the needs and requirements of the internal OhioHealth service lines, patients, and families we serve. Culture will heavily focus on growth, innovation, accountability, and integrity, all consistent with OhioHealth values.
• Is a visionary leader who effectively drives change in a complex system-oriented environment. Focuses on the implementation of the overall strategic asset plan.
• Mitigate project risk and utilize the most efficient and effective project controls / processes to execute projects at the highest level of performance, with minimal disruption to the existing operations, the highest quality, and the overall best value to the System.
• Develop and maintain a position of building industry leadership within the community regarding all facets of their business.
• Maintains and exhibits an executive level presence while interacting with internal senior leadership and high-level external entities daily.
• Develops incredibly strong relationships both inside and outside of the organization to ensure the business can achieve its goals.
• Create an inclusive environment both within the department and within the communities we serve.
Overall Real Estate, Construction and Facilities Business
• Is a part of the overall Real Estate, Construction and Facilities (RECF) senior leadership team, and works collaboratively with other RECF leaders.
• Strategically and operationally manages the overall business unit with a focus on strategy, processes, procedures, financial controls, management metrics, strategic initiatives, human resources, culture, and all other functions.
Responsibilities And Duties:
Management of the Overall Design and Construction Department
Develop strategic plans for the Design and Construction department to foster a strong culture and promote best practice operations.
Oversee the planning, design, construction, fixtures, furniture, equipment and signage for new buildings, renovations, relocations, and expansions for the System.
Drive department processes, procedures, departmental guidelines, templates, policies, and procedures to create the most efficient design and construction operation possible. Educate the team, user groups, and outside parties on such guidelines and manage accordingly.
Appropriately balance project workloads and requirements to maximize efficiency and production for all department resources.
Manage the performance of design and construction teams and ensure project teams track and manage project costs and schedules.
Implement and utilize Standard Work processes and procedures whenever possible.
Drive a culture of excellence and OhioHealth values, while living true to the OhioHealth Cardinal Value – honor the dignity and worth of each person.
Develop and effectively manage Design and Construction cost center operating budgets.
Provide the support required to enable staff to keep current with evolving construction methods, materials, codes, and regulations effecting healthcare construction.
Work closely with other non-RECF departments within OhioHealth including Supply Chain, IT, EVS, Protective Services, etc. to develop an integrated plan to deliver projects effectively, efficiently and at the best value.
Work with leader of Facility Planning to develop, implement and enforce Design Guidelines and Standards across the system.
Recruit, retain, and energize a team of highly experienced, trained and values-based team members. Manage direct reports, and the team, which may include program/project managers, program coordinators, accounting and administrative support functions and other related functions in the department.
Inspire all those you work with to achieve their full potential.
Provide career development, coaching, and mentorship for team members. Evaluate employee and department performance against established goals and objectives.
Be an excellent organizational communicator of all aspects of the active work within the Design and Construction business. Keep stakeholders, senior leadership and all other interested parties apprised of status, updates, risk, and other key items of interest.
Exhibit the highest level of fiscal prudence in all actions. Leverage OhioHealth purchasing power and resources to secure the very best pricing on all purchased goods and services. Focus on system-wide purchasing for all products and services that are part of the Standards and Guidelines. Work to identify areas of highest improvements, greatest efficiency, and best value.
Third Party Management, Community Engagement, and Industry Involvement
Develop and maintain strong internal and external relationships with colleagues, user groups, outside partners, community leaders, building officials and other interested parties.
Work with our over 300 third party partners to ensure an environment of fairness, inclusivity and respect.
Present and represent OhioHealth in the most favorable light within the design and construction community.
Strive to be the “best Owner in all the communities where we work.
Stay focused on engaging third parties in ALL the communities we work through the State of Ohio and ensure a balance of partners made up of national and regional expertise coupled with local resources.
Stay connected and engaged with all industry organizations to ensure OhioHealth is seen in the best light and helps the building industry thrive and succeed.
Project Execution
Actively organize high quality project teams and participate in selecting project architects, engineers and other professional consultants and contractors that will provide the best project outcomes.
Focus on selection of best value / most qualified companies that will provide the best service for OhioHealth and represent the organizations interests accordingly. (weighing national, regional, and local expertise)
Understand and manage the risks associated with each project. Outline and communicate risks to project stakeholders and put procedures in place to mitigate risk at all stages of a project. Promote a culture of “no surprises.
Create and manage effective internal and external reporting tools and methods to keep all stakeholders properly informed at all phases of a project.
Establish goals relative to project budgets and schedules and ensure all stakeholders are aware of the benchmarks and ensure the project teams manage to the established goals.
Oversee, assist and support as needed in the preparation of technical, bidding and construction documents.
Utilize and implement the most advanced industry technology available to enhance productivity and streamline operations.
Consistently identify and implement continuous improvement efficiencies that lower the cost of project implementation and enhance productivity.
Create, maintain, and enforce standard contracts for all projects. Update documents on a continuous basis to ensure maximum benefit is received for OhioHealth.
Ensure all available incentives, rebates, grants, and other sources of potential cost efficiencies are being captured for all projects.
Manage project fiscal year cash flows and total completed and stored to dates to maintain a the most accurate projections possible.
Prepare project plans, budgets, and other required information to support OhioHealth Executive Sponsors of projects. Work collaboratively with leadership to support submission of capital asks.
Further, develop and maintain a system / process that establishes accurate early project budgets during the pre-funding phase. Work closely with OhioHealth business units and program sponsors to identify, scope, and prioritize strategically aligned improvement efforts and help define and manage key stakeholder requirements.
Ensure goals are established, communicated, and managed for each project.
Set direction on all design and construction programs to develop and maintain process accountability and to provide timely, accurate, and results-driven data on all projects.
Provide effective and inspirational leadership to diverse project teams including internal team members, OhioHealth leadership, key stakeholders, consultants, and contractors while maintaining a high level of performance, relationships and problem solving.
Provide ideas that will inspire a culture of collaboration and innovation.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree: Construction ManagementCIF - Certified in Field - State of Ohio
Additional Job Description:
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE
+ Extensive experience leading similar construction related organizations, with special emphasis on private industry construction experience.
+ Minimum of 10 years of private sector construction and project management experience, including minimum 5 years of business management experience.
