POSITION:STAFF NATURALIST EDUCATOR Part-time, 10 month, 29 hours per week

ASSIGNMENT:Helmer Nature Center (located in the Town of Irondequoit)

QUALIFICATIONS:

• 1-3 years prior experience teaching, planning & facilitating children’s nature-based programs in an educational setting. Associate Degree.

• Knowledgeable about environmental topics, local flora/fauna, a strong environmental ethic, and a passion for education.

• Degree and/or coursework/knowledge base in Environmental Science, Biology, Education or related field.

• Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions, temperatures, and lead groups over uneven terrain.

• Ability to interact successfully with co-workers, teachers, parents, and students.

• Ability to work both as a team member and independently.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Excellent interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work with and care for live animals.

• Knowledge of Windows operating system and Microsoft Office.

• Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Under the supervision of the Nature Center Director, Naturalist Educators create and implement on-site, standards-based nature and environmental education programs within an education team framework

• Set up and clean up for programs.

• Assist in the maintenance and management of educational equipment and supplies.

• Periodic travel to West Irondequoit classrooms and outside school districts to provide outreach educational programs.

• Periodic facilitation of on-site and outreach programs for scout groups, clubs, camps, etc.

• Periodic presentation at local science education fairs and expos.

• Assist with the nature center’s public events throughout the year when education staff are needed.

• Misc. Record Keeping.

SALARY:$16.00-$17.50/hour

Staff Naturalist Educator

Position: Staff Naturalist Educator. Position Summary: Part-time, 10 month, 29 hours per week, Tuesday through Friday. Helmer Nature Center in Rochester, New York is seeking an experienced naturalist to create and implement standards-based nature and environmental education programs within a team framework for both in-district and visiting area school groups. The nature center has been owned and operated by the West Irondequoit Central School District as both an outdoor classroom and an environmental resource for the community since 1973.
