The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary educational team to develop and implement individualized recreational therapy plans for students. The CTRS supports students’ physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development through structured recreational activities aligned with physician directives and educational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Collaborate with teachers, school counselors, occupational/physical therapists, and medical professionals to assess student needs and develop individualized recreational therapy plans.
+ Design and implement therapeutic recreation programs that promote inclusion, engagement, and skill development for students with diverse needs.
+ Facilitate group and one-on-one recreational therapy sessions that support IEP (Individualized Education Program) goals.
+ Monitor and document student progress, adjusting therapy plans as needed in coordination with the educational team.
+ Provide adaptive recreational activities that enhance students’ motor skills, social interaction, and emotional regulation.
+ Educate school staff and families on the benefits of recreational therapy and how to support students’ participation in leisure activities.
+ Ensure all therapy activities are conducted in a safe, supportive, and developmentally appropriate manner.
+ Maintain accurate records and comply with all documentation requirements per school district and state regulations.
+ Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the development of student goals and accommodations.
+ Promote wellness and physical activity through school-wide initiatives and events.
Minimum Requirements:
+ Certification: Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential, in accordance with state and school district requirements.
+ Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of recent experience in recreational therapy, preferably in a pediatric, school, or educational setting.
+ Education: Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field from an accredited institution.
+ CPR Certification: Current and valid CPR certification (required if applicable by school policy).
+ Health Requirements:
+ Completion of a TB Questionnaire, PPD test, or chest x-ray (as required).
+ Current health certificate (as required by contract or state regulation).
+ Legal Requirements:
+ Must meet all federal, state, and local employment and licensure requirements.
+ Must be at least 18 years of age.
