    Stanford University has an immediate opening for an Alternate Format & Assistive Technology Manager in the Office of Accessible Education (OAE). This position will be in the Division of Student Affairs, which supports many student experiences outside the classroom in our residences, community centers, student organizations, health center, career education center, and more.

     

    The mission of the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) is to promote an accessible environment for students with disabilities. Through both academic and housing accommodations, we work to mitigate physical and attitudinal barriers that students might face. We are dedicated to supporting students with disabilities, so they have access to perform at their academic potential. We also strive to promote the inclusive environment they need to experience full membership in our diverse Stanford community.

     

    The Alternate Format & Assistive Technology Manager leads the design, production, and delivery of accessible educational materials and assistive technology services to support students with disabilities. This role involves strategic planning and execution of complex remediation workflows, team leadership, and active collaboration with faculty, students, and university partners. The manager oversees staff performance, ensures adherence to accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, Braille), and integrates evolving technologies to remove access barriers in teaching and learning. Additionally, the role includes managing software and hardware for assistive technology, guiding cross-functional accessibility initiatives, and maintaining high standards of service through continual evaluation and innovation. This position reports to the OAE’s director of technology.

    In this role, you will:

    + Manage workflow for alternate format team and set team priorities; negotiate deadlines with students and instructional staff.

    + Manage the priority of scheduled jobs based on student need, team load and resources available. Monitor team performance to make sure that deadlines are met.

    + Maintain and analyze team production metrics and manage resources based on these metrics..

    + Supervise and review remediated files created by Alternate Format Specialists, including but not limited to: track and schedule jobs within our database management system; coordinate the timely distribution of completed course materials to students on multiple platforms.

    + Ensure adherence to defined course, student, docx, braille and WCAG html standards.

    + Assess original course materials to develop strategy in coordination with student, faculty, Alternate Format Specialists and the student’s Disability

    + Advisor (if appropriate) for removing document access barriers in specific classes.

    + Consider how/if the remediation processes may need to be adjusted if the student is enrolled in the course versus TA-ing as a part of their degree requirements.

    + Present the course remediation strategy to student, faculty, and alt format team to ensure alignment and understanding of timelines and processes.

    + Strategize with instructors regarding the time constraints required for remediation of materials depending on final output format.

    + Actively partner with faculty to obtain their syllabus, slide decks, problem sets, solutions, and exams with sufficient lead time to provide students with equal access without delays.

    + Oversee production process; develop and document embossing and digital production specifications, and select appropriate production media and materials (e.g., braille paper, Swell Touch paper, bindings, etc).

    + Ensure that the team has the software, technology and materials, and additional workflows or training needed to meet deadlines.

    + Manage and develop relationships with vendors, campus partners, and national organizations. Collaborate with:

    + Stanford Office of Digital Accessibility around platform access issues (e.g., Canvas, Gradescope).

    + Stanford Libraries to scan library holdings, developing workflows for requesting digital materials; creating more integrated lending pathways.

    + Vendors of software applications used for alt format remediation; assistive technology software (e.g., Otter.ai, Speechify, Dragon, etc); and embossing equipment.

    + Provide direction for the team in terms of new skills and expertise individual designers need to develop, as well as overall direction for the design program. Oversee recruitment, selection, training, and performance evaluation of staff.

    + Manage biannual all-team onsite retreats for training (e.g, accessible HTML, Chat GPT, JAWS), team building, and alignment with larger OAE staff.

    + Maintain knowledge of industry standards, trends and state-of-the-art technology to provide and enhance services.

    + Actively encourage and support the use of computer-based tools by developing and implementing new tools and resources for instructors or students, assisting them with the tools, disseminating knowledge of these tools throughout the program or university, and creating and supporting an infrastructure that allows use of the tools in research, teaching and/or learning.

    + Meet with individual students to determine the assistive technology they need to access their educational content.

    + License software and/or acquire hardware as needed to accommodate students

    + Loan management of assistive technology

    + Renew software licenses

    + Reset materials when returned

    + Maintain equipment and verify functionality and compatibility

    + Maintain knowledge of accessibility features of current operating systems

    + Maintain awareness of new tools and resources to be able to leverage these in solving student access challenges.

    To be successful in this role, you will bring:

    + Bachelor's degree in related field and five years of relevant work and management experience, or equivalent combination of education and relevant work and management experience.

    + Demonstrated experience leading and developing staff and managing a team in a fast-paced environment.

    + Ability to critically evaluate the workflows and final products of team staff to provide regular, constructive performance feedback.

    + Strong analysis and problem-solving skills.

    + Ability to participate in strategic planning and development as a member of the OAE leadership team.

    + Ability to serve as a subject matter expert for campus partners and colleagues.

    + Demonstrated ability to manage complex, highly technical projects or course content while balancing resources, timing, and competing needs.

    + Advanced knowledge of common assistive technology software and hardware.

    + Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively resolve complex problems.

    + Ability to manage changing priorities, deadlines, and student and faculty needs.

    + In-depth understanding and knowledge of industry standards, trends, and technical knowledge.

    + Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to synthesize and articulate complex technical concepts, with a variety of audiences.

    + Demonstrated ability to plan and oversee multiple projects simultaneously.

    + Ability to perform detailed work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

    + Ability to work effectively with others as part of a team, and maintaining positive relationships.

    + Substantial experience managing a team of professional staff, both hybrid and remote.

    + Prior work experience in document remediation and accessibility of university (including graduate) level STEM, foreign language, and/or music.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    + This is a hybrid position which requires 2-4 days of onsite work per week.

    The expected pay range for this position is $ $134,222 to $149,500 per annum.
