    Job Summary

    Lab Tech position in a research lab on impact of hypoxia on rodent behavior and molecular markers for inflammation and oxidative stress. Applicant will consult with supervisor on lab protocols and experimental design but will then work independently on research projects. Applicant must have experience working with rats, and preferably with rodent behavioral assays. Applicant must be proficient in lab assays such as ELISA , westerns, flow cytometry, cryostat sectioning and immune histochemical staining. Applicant must be able to read experimental protocols and set up new assays in the lab with minimal supervision. Applicant should have experience with analyzing data, conducting statistical analyses, and reporting data to senior lab personnel in a timely and organized manner. Applicant should be able to communicate clearly on experiments conducted and data generated. Experience with ordering through USHOP is a plus. Experience with literature surveys and assessing new protocols to be used in the lab is a plus.

    Responsibilities

    1. Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed.

    2. Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment.

    3. Routinely maintains and cleans lab areas and keeps an inventory log of supplies to be ordered.

    4. Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials.

    5. Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research.

    6. Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.

    7. May supervise the care of research animals or collect tissue for laboratory analysis.

    8. May oversee the training of high school and undergraduate students doing internships in the laboratory.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

     

    OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
