Job Summary
University Housing & Dining Services ( UHDS ) is seeking an Operations Supervisor – Landscape Services. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.
University Housing & Dining Services’ ( UHDS ) vision is to engage OSU students, enrich their lives and help them thrive. The department offers a variety of living and dining options in 15 residence halls, more than 25 campus dining locations, a grocery market, The Gem and 1045 SW Madison Ave. apartments, and Orchard Court family housing. As an auxiliary enterprise, UHDS is funded solely by customers who utilize these programs. The Landscape Services Operations and Facilities Supervisor is responsible for the overall presentation of UHDS facilities and provides support to numerous logistical elements that are critical to the UHDS vision. This position is in a leadership role, requiring vision, a proactive attitude, an ability to work autonomously, and respond effectively to unanticipated situations.
This position also maintains, repairs, improves and modernizes UHDS landscapes and reduces the environmental impacts of UHDS operations while providing safe, secure, and sanitary living & dining facilities for students living in University owned facilities. This role is expected to perform the planning and routine maintenance tasks associated with these areas of expertise while also utilizing landscape staff to support in the execution of these duties. This role is a liaison for contracts related to exterior building presentation and maintenance, including but not limited to landscape services, hardscape surfaces, grounds use requests, and parking lot maintenance. This position reports to the Associate Director of Facilities Maintenance.
This position will adhere to all OSU and UHDS policies and procedures.
This position performs “essential functions” and is required to report to work during emergency university closures.

Key Responsibilities
75% SUPERVISION , COORDINATION AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT
+ This position is tasked with the oversight and delivery of a comprehensive landscape and hardscape program for UHDS that manages approximately 60 acres of exterior spaces on campus
+ Supervise 1-3 full time FTE , 1-2 student interns and 8-10 student staff members in the care of all lawns, trees, plants, and flower beds adjacent to UHDS facilities.
+ Plans work, assigns work, and approves/reviews work of staff.
+ Evaluates employee performance and provides timely and appropriate performance appraisals, coaching and resources to ensure employees are successful and accountable for their work
+ Responds to grievances and processes paperwork related to employee job related injuries.
+ Assess the training needs of staff and ensure that the unit is providing appropriate instruction. Provides opportunities for cross-training.
+ Recruit, select, and train academic year and summer student staff. Provide leadership to recruitment, selection, and training of all Landscape Services student staff. Provides initial orientation and training to new employees.
+ Works with staff to build individual professional development plans, helping to identify growth needed to better utilize strengths and map long-term career goals.
+ Coordinate workflow, schedule staff, assign tasks, and ensure work is completed to standard.
+ Communicate with stakeholders and residents impacted by work being performed by staff within this workgroup. Provide proper notification and work to minimize the impact of the work when possible.
10% ACADEMIC AND UHDS PARTNERSHIPS AND ENGAGEMENT
+ Develop and execute larger scaled projects utilizing the work team in coordination with campus partners and UHDS partners including improvement and upgrades to landscaped and hardscaped areas.
+ Operation and expansion of UHDS Food Forests and delivery of sustainable plant and land management utilizing students engaged in developmental leadership roles with clearly articulated academic outcomes.
+ Develop funding estimates and grant requests for program initiatives.
+ Support internship opportunities designed to provide students with firsthand experience in the operations and commercial applications of their fields as they relate to the work of the UHDS Facilities unit.
+ Work directly with UHDS Chefs and Dietitian to create seasonal menus based on produce production from UHDS Food Forests.
+ Partner closely with Transportation Services for parking lot maintenance services and improvement and development of transportation hubs across campus.
10% UNIT LEADERSHIP
+ The Landscape Services Operations and Facilities Supervisor is a member of the Facilities Services Leadership Team and is actively engaged in providing vision and leadership to the direct reports of the position as well as the larger Facilities Services group. Assists in developing policy and procedures. Participates in planning meetings for the unit and department. Leads and attends coordination meetings. Participates in scheduling and customer support meetings. May attend technical seminars, technical training, industry standards and product demonstrations. Participates in the development and delivery of unit safety meetings. Assists with residence hall opening and closing coordination.
5% OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
What You Will Need
+ Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Horticulture, Crop and Soil Sciences, Agriculture or other field related to the work being performedOR2 years of professional experience in commercial, public, or University land care and grounds operations with a minimum of 1 year experience with lead or supervisory work.
+ Pursuant to UHDS Policy, this position is required to maintain current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator ( CPR / AED ) certification (if cognitively and physically able to do so) within 90 days of employment or when training becomes available by the department. Training is provided at department expense. Duty to act ends at summoning professional emergency assistance.
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills required. Ability to communicate concepts, policies and procedures clearly and effectively.
+ Demonstrable ability to work with individuals and communities of students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds and personal characteristics and the ability to develop purposeful networks and partnerships in order to achieve department mission and objectives.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

+ Demonstrated staff supervision skills, including scheduling, assigning work, providing feedback, and training.
+ Ability to build and maintain collaborative working partnerships and provide a high level of internal and external customer service within the unit, department, and OSU community.
+ Certifications in Arbor care or organic land management practices.
+ Knowledge and experience in irrigation design, layout, operations and maintenance.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This duties of this position require employees to:
+ Operate a University vehicle: Passenger Vehicle and Forklift.
+ Enter restricted areas and confined spaces.
+ Work with chemicals in a non-lab setting (art, swimming pool, cleaning, or shop chemicals, gasoline, etc).
+ Work with lift equipment (chain fall, sling, stand, pallet jack, vehicle lift, electric hoist, block and tackle, etc).
+ Use power tools; Pneumatic driven tools; Gasoline driven tools; Electric tools
+ Work on elevated surfaces (roof access manlift, catwalk, tower climbing, ladder, tree climbing, scaffold, etc).
+ May be exposed to high noise level.
+ Lift and Carry Objects, Supplies & Equipment up to 50 lbs.
+ Report to work during emergency University closures
