The AWS Infrastructure Services organization is hiring, and we’re looking for great Network Development Managers (NDM) to join our team. Within Networking, we’re confronting and solving complex and high-stakes challenges. Our teams support all aspects of connectivity to/from Amazon and the outside world, as well as the connectivity between Amazon’s data centers and services. As a member of one our network engineering teams, you will play a part in designing and deploying networks that simply cannot fail, must scale infinitely, and can never constrain growth or innovation. AWS GCNA(Global Connectivity and Network Availability) is the backbone that connects the global AWS network. Focused on controlling the internet traffic that allows users to access their information and applications regardless of where they are in the world. GCNA is responsible for building and designing a complex backbone network that allows internet traffic to flow efficiently between data centers and customers.

We are inventing the networks of the future so our Network Managers require a deep background in network hardware, routing protocols and deploying large scale networks. SDN is a reality at Amazon and our networks are designed to be fully managed and operated via software systems. Some proficiency in Python, Perl, C, or Shell Scripting is required. 15% international travel required

As a Network Development Manager at Amazon, your core job responsibility is to deploy ahead of customer or technology needs, always predicting and solving for problems that have not yet occurred. This takes the form of creating and defending High Level Design (HLD) documents, working with vendors or internal stakeholders to influence technology roadmaps, constructing and testing your solutions, and providing support to the teams that will operate these designs. We listen to our customers (both internal and external), but we also listen to our teams. Our Engineers contribute materially to each team’s roadmap, and constantly help us to determine what’s most important. Together, you and your leadership team will decide on the projects that best support your team’s mission. You will have the resources and time necessary to understand, scope, and deliver these solutions.

Key job responsibilities

Operational Excellence

As a manager within the Networking team you will be expected to drive operational excellence in everything we do. This includes creating processes and procedures to improve efficiency in our day-to-day tasks and projects. You will drive standards across the network and ensure that we are fully compliant to those standards and policies. You will work closely on supporting our internal customers and ensuring that their needs and issues are being addressed.

Network Measurement

As a Network Development Manager, you will be expected to drive quality into the metrics we report to assist us in focusing on the areas that give us the best ROI. This includes measurement of our issues, network capacity, vendor equipment/failures analysis and network performance.

Performance Management/Team Health

You will own all facets of performance and career management for the team. Regular one-on-one meetings with all team members are required. You will be expected to provide both technical and ‘soft skill’ mentoring in order to maintain a well-rounded, world-class organization. This includes project management, quality audits and coordination of training sessions with senior-level engineers as well as day-to-day oversight of the team including scheduling of a 8x7x365 operational rota.

Incident/Change Management

You will be integral to developing and improving incident and change management within the Networking space. Responsibilities include driving initiatives regarding improvements to existing tools & processes and providing feedback on new practices & procedures in order to scale with the rapid expansion of the Amazon platform and customer base.

Recruiting and Hiring

You will take the lead in hiring quality personnel who not only fit the needs of the current organization but also will allow the team to scale with platform and service growth. You will coordinate with Amazon and external recruiting staff to evaluate potential candidates, participate in initial phone screens and provide relevant guidance and feedback during on-site interview loops. You will also be responsible for ensuring that proper training takes place for all new hires.

Automation

You will be heavily involved in driving the team to analyze day to day operations in order to identify new automation opportunities. This will include helping our software teams in Networking understand our requirements and drive their roadmaps to ensure that our network engineers are able to directly create new automation tasks directly within those software frameworks rather than relying on other teams to deliver them.

Goal Setting and Delivery

You will directly own defining and delivering strategic goals for your team and for the wider Topology team. As part of this responsibility, you will be expected to communicate goals to the team, align the necessary resources, and communicate status to the wider leadership team.

A day in the life

Engineers in the Internet Edge organization have a wide range of responsibilities: we evolve routing policy, implement traffic engineering solutions, grow our peering footprint, secure the “front door” from bad actors on the Internet, and architect the hardware platforms and network design to support any Amazon product that needs to reach end-users worldwide. Our infrastructure moves terabits of traffic to and from the Internet at any given moment, and represents one of the largest edge surface areas in the world, requiring complex solutions to ensure that capacity always stays ahead of demand. To accomplish that, our engineers develop automation, write software, and work with a wide range of partner teams to continually improve and automate our Internet connectivity in areas such as capacity delivery, configuration deployment, impairment detection, and traffic optimization. Internet Edge engineers make decisions on both a day-to-day and long-term strategic basis, which carry a large amount of responsibility and impact across all of Amazon’s products.

Basic Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or relevant experience.

- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.

- 5+ years people management experience or relevant leadership experience, managing a team of 8+ individual contributors.

- 3+ years of past experience with network engineering either as a manager or individual contributor.

Preferred Qualifications

- Working knowledge of Networking (TCP/IP, Routing/Switching & Troubleshooting).

- Experience representing your team/technical area to senior management.

- Experience contributing to the creation and implementation of high quality, high volume recruiting plans.

- Experience presenting root cause analysis and error correction from operational events to senior management.

- Working knowledge and experience of developing operational metrics.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $272,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
