    Job Summary

    The Manager of Environmental Safety & Emergency Management will lead and oversee the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the environmental health and safety programs in their hospital(s). This critical leadership role ensures compliance with relevant regulatory bodies, with a particular emphasis on The Joint Commission’s standards regarding the Environment of Care (EC), Life Safety (LS), and Emergency Management (EM). The position also demands a high level of expertise in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, OSHA regulations, hazardous materials management, and workplace safety. This position will work closely with hospital leadership, clinical departments, and external regulatory agencies to create and maintain a safe and compliant environment for staff, patients, and visitors.

     

    Essential Functions of the Role

     

    Oversee the EC and EM programs at assigned hospitals, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and regulatory requirements. Collaborate with hospital administrators and leadership teams to continually improve safety outcomes.

     

    Serve as the hospital's subject matter expert on environmental health and safety regulations, advising leadership on changes in regulatory requirements and ensuring proactive adjustments to hospital policies and practices.

     

    Lead as the chairperson of the multidisciplinary Environment of Care Committee as well as the hospital Safety Officer to analyze and improve the safety environment of the hospital.

     

    Lead the Environment of Care (EC) and Life Safety (LS) portions of The Joint Commission survey process to ensure successful accreditation and licensing.

     

    Monitor and drive compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Texas DSHS, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and other applicable regulations.

     

    Direct the safe and compliant management and record keeping of hazardous materials, chemicals, and waste within the hospital environment, ensuring adherence to OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard, as well as environmental guidelines.

     

    Operationalize and implement training programs on the hospital’s Emergency Operation Plan, including disaster response, evacuation protocols, and command center operations.

     

    Provide oversight for environmental and life safety compliance in construction and renovation projects, ensuring adherence to applicable code requirements such as Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM) and infection control requirements.

     

    Performs HR related activities to include interviewing, making hiring recommendations, orienting, evaluating, coaching, team building activities, and if necessary, assisting with disciplinary actions. Performs other position appropriate duties as required in a competent, professional and courteous manner.

    Key Success Factors

    + A thorough working knowledge of The Joint Commission EC, LS, and EM standards is needed. This includes NFPA, OSHA, Texas DSHS, CMS, and other regulations.

    + The ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms.

    + The ability to collaborate with others and achieve high quality results.

    + Data-based and critical thinking skills as well as an ability to solve problems efficiently and effectively.

    + A fundamental knowledge of emergency management concepts and values as they apply to health care facilities.

    + The ability to manage projects from beginning to end and drive change through continuous process improvement.

    + Proficiency in basic technology and computer skills including Microsoft Office programs.

    + EDUCATION - Bachelor's or 4 years of work experience above the minimum qualification

    + EXPERIENCE - 2 Years of Experience

    + Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

    + Associate Safety Professional (ASP)

    + Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
