The role applies knowledge of database management systems to plan, develop, test, and implement additions or changes to relational databases systems, performs conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling, and defines and implements security measures to safeguard the data contained therein.

+ Database Management and Performance Optimization (25%)

+ Monitor and tune performance of databases and queries

+ Plan, implement, and test the backup, recovery, and restoration of databases

+ Perform regularly scheduled database reorganizations and archiving

+ Implement data retention polices and ensure proper purging of databases

+ Execute disaster recovery activities during planned (or actual) events

+ Monitor log files produced by SQL Auditing.

+ Create, updated, and maintain database designs for specific business applications

+ Production Support (25%)

+ Provide 24x7x365 support when required (including after-hours/weekends)

+ Troubleshoot database-related defects/issues and provide consultation to IT teams

+ Interface with 3rd party vendors for technical support (as needed)

+ Database Server and Tools (20%)

+ Install, configure, and upgrade MS SQL Server software

+ Create new SQL Server instances in all environments

+ Install, configure, and upgrade 3rd party DBA tools (e.g. TOAD)

+ Perform patch management (e.g. timely install of service packs/fixes)

+ Database Security (10%)

+ Create and maintain users account setup (authentication)

+ Assign privileges and permission (authorization)

+ Monitor and report on user access and/or access violations (auditing)

+ Develop controls to separate, monitor, and audit data sets

+ Implement and Audit database level controls to ensure proper separation of data between the 2 customers serviced by WPCU.

+ Storage and Capacity Planning (10%)

+ Engage with other business units to determine future MS SQL Database requirements.

+ Ensure proper database space allocation, utilization, and overall management

+ Execute capacity planning for anticipate growth needs

+ Database Governance (10%)

+ Create, document, and maintain written database standards, policies, and procedures

+ Ensure compliance with database vendor license agreement(s)

+ Evaluate MS SQL Server features and related products for future usage

+ Provide input to IT management for annual budgeting and planning processes

+ Ensures proper policies, procedures, risk mitigation activities, and operating controls are followed. Reports gaps in policies, procedures, and operating controls to leadership to ensure member impact and risk is mitigated.

Required Skills

+ Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; an equivalent combination of an Associate’s Degree in a computer related field and 7 years of experience in the same areas noted above will be considered.

+ Minimum of 5 years of experience administering MS SQL Server 2008, 2012, and higher databases, including stored procedure design, database maintenance, database clustering and mirroring implementation in a medium-to-large organization.

+ Experience supporting large OLTP data-driven applications in a 24x7x365 high availability production environment

+ Experience with data management and data processing flowcharting techniques

+ Familiarity with monitoring tools like Idera and TOAD; practical experience is preferred

+ Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

+ Must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a team.
