Job Summary
The University of Utah’s Scientific Computing and Imaging ( SCI ) Institute is hiring an Administrative Director to lead core operations and strategic planning in support of its mission. This position plays a central leadership role, working closely with the SCI Director to manage the Institute’s financial, administrative, and personnel systems.
The Administrative Director will oversee budget development, space planning, staff management, and administrative compliance, ensuring that all operations run efficiently and align with institutional and federal research requirements. This role requires a strong understanding of academic research environments and the ability to coordinate across departments, funding agencies, and university leadership.
Candidates should bring experience in managing complex organizations, a track record of building effective systems, and the judgment to support long-term planning in a research-driven context. This is a key leadership position for someone who can turn operational strategy into sustained institutional support for innovation.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
+ Establishes administrative and operations performance measures such as metrics, service levels, escalation paths, etc., to ensure consistent operations and performance.
+ Identifies gaps, redundancies, bottlenecks and opportunities for efficiencies in the administrative and financial processes and systems.
+ Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships.
+ Provides strategic oversight and leadership for human resources at the SCI Institute.
+ Ensures competency of staff, determines departmental training needs, develops and presents educational programs and training as needed, mentors, coaches and oversees ongoing staff performance management.
+ Coordinates with the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs ( SVPAA ) office to ensure timely budget approval and alignment with university financial policies.
+ Directs the compilation of data used to prepare budgets, accounts, and coordinating appropriations while balancing University fund requirements.
+ Provides strategic direction for administrative and financial operations by setting short and long-term goals, estimating budgetary requirements for space and non-research equipment, and planning and implementing special operations projects and policies.
+ Forecasts capital and operating budget needs in evaluating and reporting on financial analysis, space utilization, staff performance evaluation, etc.
+ Develops strategies consistent with the University of Utah’s continuous quality improvement program.
+ Maintains effective control of the unit’s budget while ensuring that funds are used to meet the goals and mission of the university and the Institute, as defined by the SCI Director.
+ Oversees Accounting and Operations Managers and coordinates all aspects of non-technical staff management including recruitment and retention of assigned staff.
+ Oversees the analysis and determination of appropriate administrative staff mix to support Institute needs.
+ Participates in committee and other meetings to establish and coordinate administrative plans and policies.
Problem Solving
Incumbents in this position have the authority to manage assigned units and designated programs and services. Directs the planning and administration of the unit’s budget and makes spending decisions within budget guidelines. Oversees program development for the Institute in tandem with fellow Directors and ensures that policies and procedures are followed.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, clinical field, or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); nine years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, staff management, and effective communications skills required.
Completion of hospital provided supervisory training within one year of employment may also be required.
This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); nine years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, staff management, and effective communications skills required.
