Job Summary:
As an Autonomy Engineering Specialist at Caterpillar, you will play a key role in developing and integrating advanced autonomous technologies into Caterpillar’s next-generation machinery. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and validate intelligent systems that enable machine perception, decision-making, and control in complex off-highway environments. This role requires a strong foundation in robotics, artificial intelligence, and software architecture, along with hands-on experience in deploying autonomy solutions in real-world applications.
You will be responsible for driving innovation in autonomy features such as object detection, path planning, localization, and remote operation. Your work will directly contribute to Caterpillar’s mission to build a safer, more efficient, and sustainable future through cutting-edge technology.
What You Will Do:
+ Design, develop, and integrate autonomous systems for heavy machinery, including perception, localization, planning, and control.
+ Implement AI and machine learning algorithms using tools such as Python, C++, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and ROS.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure robust system integration and performance across mechanical, electrical, and software domains.
+ Conduct simulation and field testing to validate autonomous functionality in real-world environments.
+ Analyze system performance data, troubleshoot issues, and drive continuous improvement in autonomy features.
+ Participate in design and code reviews, ensuring compliance with Caterpillar’s engineering and safety standards.
Education requirement:
Requires a degree in an accredited Engineering or Computer Science curriculum.
What skills you will have:
Artificial Intelligence:
+ Applies machine learning and AI algorithms to enable autonomous functionality in heavy machinery.
+ Utilizes tools such as **Python** , **TensorFlow** , **PyTorch** , and **OpenCV** for perception, decision-making, and control systems.
+ Develops and trains models for object detection, path planning, and predictive maintenance.
+ Integrates AI solutions with embedded systems and real-time operating environments.
Software Product Design/Architecture:
+ Designs scalable and modular software architectures for autonomous vehicle systems.
+ Uses tools like **MATLAB/Simulink** , **ROS (Robot Operating System)** , and **Enterprise Architect** to model and simulate system behavior.
+ Defines software interfaces and data flows between perception, planning, and control modules.
+ Conducts design reviews and ensures compliance with Caterpillar’s software development standards.
**Technical Excellence** :
+ Demonstrates deep technical knowledge in robotics, control systems, and embedded software.
+ Proficient in **C/C++** , **Python** , and **Linux-based development environments** for real-time applications.
+ Leads root cause analysis and resolution of complex technical issues in autonomous systems.
+ Stays current with emerging technologies in autonomy, AI, and advanced sensing systems.
Additional Information:
This position requires the candidate to **work full-time at the Mossville, IL office.**
Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position.
This position may require up to 10% travel.

Summary Pay Range:
$126,000.00 - $204,720.00
