    Primary Function of Organizational Unit

    The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) offers a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. As one of the campuses of the University of North Carolina (UNC) system, North Carolina Central University is located in Durham near Research Triangle Park. The Department of Communication Science and Disorders(CSD) is a full-time, campus-based graduate program and features a curriculum that integrates research, evidence-based clinical experiences, and a focus on serving populations from varied backgrounds. The Master of Science degree program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The NCCU Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic provides speech, language, and hearing evaluations and treatment services for clients across the lifespan.

    Primary Purpose of Position

    The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate with campus and community-based clinical supervisors to provide clinical experiences that foster and provide the graduate students’ necessary knowledge, skills, and clinical hours required to meet ASHA certification and North Carolina licensure standards in Speech-Language Pathology. The Clinical Assistant Director/Clinical Associate Professor will teach and supervise graduate students in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders. This position will facilitate alignment with and maintain accreditation by the Council for Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Pathology. Duties of the position include but are not limited to the coordination and management of community-based practicum placements and external supervisor clinical education of the Department’s clinical education program, providing clinical training and supervision to graduate students in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders co-teaching clinical practicum courses, and engaging/collaborating in scholarly work and service.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    | Candidates with expertise in clinical supervision and clinic management will receive preferential consideration. Candidates must work collaboratively with students and other stakeholders using an interprofessional framework and demonstrate an awareness of current trends in the profession and in clinical education. Knowledge of CAA accreditation and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification standards is necessary. Demonstrate a strong interest in community outreach and a commitment to working with the underrepresented population

    Minimum Education/Experience

    Earned PhD or EdD (ABD considered) in Speech-Language Pathology, Speech and Hearing Science, or a related discipline. If the doctorate is from a related discipline(e.g., EdD, PhD in Special Education), 18 doctoral-level credit hours must have pertained to communication sciences and disorders.

     

    Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

     

    Certification- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from ASHA; possess or eligible for NC licensure in Speech-Language Pathology; documentation of two (2) hours of professional development/continuing education in clinical instruction/supervision if offered the position.

    The successful candidate is expected to serve as the Assistant/Assoicate Clinical Professor for the Department of Communication Science & Disorders and to provide clinical supervision of students. Service requirements include participating in service to the department, university, and the profession. Responsibilities include:

     

    • Providing instruction in clinical courses.

    • Supervising, evaluating, and mentoring students and participating in all aspects of clinical experiences.

    • Coordination and management of the community-based clinic.

    • Assignment of graduate students to clinic placement sites

    • Managing a database of external placements and affiliation agreements.

    • Maintaining student clinical records for grading and reporting purposes

    • Maintaining client EMR files for compliance

    • Enforcing and monitoring HIPAA and FERPA compliance and

     

    training for all students.

     

    • Evaluating and facilitating clinical education effectiveness by coordinating and conducting visits to the clinical education sites.

    • Maintaining documentation supporting clinical organization and for the policies and practices to maintain accreditation.
