    Shipfitter - San Diego, CA

    Job Description

    As a Shipfitter, you will be responsible for cutting, grinding, and assembling metal structural parts using fitting aids and rigging equipment to align parts according to blueprints. You will also tack and weld foundations, install temporary fasteners to hold structural members in place, and perform other related tasks as assigned.

    Responsibilities

    + Lay out work from blueprints.

    + Cut, burn, grind, rip-out and fit-up metal structural parts for placement on ships.

    + Tack and weld foundations and structural members.

    + Operate high-reach equipment including condors and scissor lifts.

    + Set up tools and equipment at the job site.

    + Clean up and remove scrap to the nearest scrap tub.

    + Use rigging equipment effectively.

    Essential Skills

    + Minimum of five years of shipyard experience.

    + Demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology, and different metals.

    + Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) T-1 welding certification.

    + Ability to pass hands-on assessment test including knowledge, burning and scarfing, and fabrication assessments.

    + Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.

    + Ability to safely access and move around ships.

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

    + Minimum two years of journeyman level experience.

    + Good burning, welding, and craftsmanship skills.

    + Mechanical ability preferred.

    + SMAW certification is optional but highly recommended.

    + Ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions.

    + Ability to hear warning signals and read safety instructions.

    + General safety awareness and hazard avoidance.

    Work Environment

    + Work will support the T-AO New Construction Program, specifically in the SOC 6 area. The role involves working on new fleet oilers designed for the U.S. Navy, equipped to transfer fuel to carrier strike groups at sea. The vessels feature a significant dry cargo capacity, aviation capability, and a speed of 20 knots. They are designed with double hulls to protect against oil spills and have strengthened cargo and ballast tanks. The work environment requires adherence to safety protocols and may involve working at heights and in confined spaces.

    + This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, California.

     

    Pay and Benefits

     

    The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $43.00/hr.
