Under general supervision, the Special Events Assistant for the Community Programs, assists with various special events, including setting up and tearing down program equipment for the Healthy Farmers Markets program. The Healthy Farmers Markets program strives to increase food security amongst underserved populations in need of access to fresh produce. The vision of the Healthy Farmers Market is to increase food justice, inspire, nurture, and support healthy communities with a mission to build a marketplace that fosters community while offering affordable, fresh food and a variety of community and health resources. The program provides free produce vouchers and fresh food boxes to households experiencing financial hardship. This position will assist with set-up and tear-down operations to ensure market operations run as smoothly as possible. This position will report to the Health Equity Community Connections Coordinator and will receive onsite direction from the Healthy Farmers Markets Manager.
This position operates on select Tuesdays and Thursdays, a part-time, variable-hour position that requires on-site availability at every market during the market season. A total of up to 18 outdoor events are incorporated into the working schedule. The position encompasses approximately 72 hours.
Anticipated Start Date: July 10th, 2025.
Must be available during the following dates and times (exceptions will be made if hired after a particular program date):
+ Program location will be Margaret W. Carpenter Recreation Center
+ Tuesdays: June 17, July 29, Sept 30, Aug 26, Oct 14 (5 events)
+ Hours per event: approximately 4 hours
+ Set-up: 6:45 a.m. - 8:45 a.m.
+ Tear-down: Noon - 2:00 p.m.
+ Program location will be McAllister Park
+ Thursdays, July 10th -Thurs, Oct 2nd (13 events)
+ Hours per event: approximately 4 hours
+ Set-up: Noon - 2 p.m.
+ Tear-down: 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m
We are hiring for two vacancies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

When assisting with the Healthy Farmers Markets, the primary job duties are set-up and tear-down.
Assists with small-scale events, indoor and outdoor concerts, large outdoor festivals, and smaller family events.
Complies with City and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
May distribute promotional posters.
May shop for event supplies.
May wear mascot costume and be mindful of care of the costume. Maintain mascot persona whenever in costume. Demonstrate knowledge of human behavior to read situations (when to approach or leave a situation, how to physically engage situations in an appropriate manner without using voice).
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
Must be at least 15 years of age.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of maintaining efficient event operations.
Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with the public.
Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays, or flexible schedules.
Ability to work well with others.
Ability to read human behavior and know when to approach or disengage.
Ability to react quickly and accurately to changing weather elements.
Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, talk, hear and make repetitive motions. This position is mostly: medium to heavy work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. The employee is required to have close visual acuity. The employee is subject to inside and outside conditions.
