Job Description

The Jacksonville Public Library is actively seeking a Learning Services Specialist – Middle Childhood and Teen.

This is professional work in planning, organizing, developing, implementing, maintaining, and coordinating youth learning and literacy curriculum, staff training and coaching, and community partnerships for the library system. Work requires basic understanding and application of educational and instructional theories, principles, practices, usually gained through degree granting schools, or an equivalent level of practical knowledge gained through experience. Work requires the ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines. Supports the overall mission of the Library by providing customer service in a manner that creates a positive customer experience. Work involves contact with library staff and customers, and requires the ability to understand people, demonstrate sensitivity to others’ points of view, and persuade or show assertiveness necessary to influence behavior, and positively change an opinion, or turn a situation around. The work is covered by clearly defined policies and principles underlying the programs area where the incumbent is required to exercise judgment in accomplishing program objectives. The work involves differing situations requiring use of judgment in search for solutions or new applications within ones' known experiences. Work is performed primarily in an office environment though the employee may be required to make field visits for outreach programs, special events and public engagements and may require the employee to work on evenings or weekends. Operates standard office equipment such as personal computers and a motor vehicle. The physical demands consist mainly of sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time and occasionally lifting and moving light objects. The work is performed under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, precedents, methods, techniques, standards, and, or well-defined policies, and the worker plans and organizes the work, determines their own priorities, and the work is reviewed, usually after the fact, in terms of quality, volume, timeliness, and for adherence to established methods. standards, and policies.
Examples of Work
+ Plans, organizes, and develops the curriculum used by library staff performing youth learning programs, events, and activities.
+ Assesses, maintains, and updates a catalog of youth services to be offered system wide.
+ Develops the vision for system-wide youth services, including methodologies and standards for creating, implementing, and assessing the success measures for locally relevant programs and services.
+ Provides coaching and feedback to staff conducting programs for youth.
+ Recommends new programs and revisions to existing programs.
+ Participates in the interview process for the selection of new staff.
+ Provides professional training, guidance and technical assistance to staff, community partners, and program participants.
+ Maintains and cultivates contact with individuals locally, regionally, and nationally including educators, providers of services to youth, and other public servants.
+ Promotes library services and programs to community groups and shares resources with other libraries, educational, social service, and community groups.
+ Maintains professional awareness of current events, related developments and trends through reading professional literature and other news media.
+ Represents the Jacksonville Public Library at and participates in national, state, and local literacy-related activities, programs, seminars, workshops, and conferences.
+ Establishes and maintains program records and statistics and prepares reports.
+ Communicates clear direction, manages for results, and leads organizational change.
+ Operates standard office and library equipment such as personal computers or mobile devices using word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and other related software, peripheral and electronic devices, copiers, and calculators.
+ Supports the overall mission of the Library by providing customer service in a manner that creates a positive customer experience.
+ Assists with maintaining appearance standards by reporting facilities issues and picking up litter on library grounds.
+ Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.

OPEN REQUIREMENTS:
+ A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a preferred concentration in education, child development or other related field is required.
+ Two years of experience in education (in traditional or non-traditional settings) or training is required.
+ Master’s degree in childhood development or education is preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
+ The probationary period for this class is one year.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
+ A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
+ Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification.
