    The School of Law has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director/Graduate Program Specialist to join their team.** **POSITION PURPOSE

     

    The individual holding this position will support the activities of the Barer Institute for Leadership in Law & Global Development and serve as part of the leadership team for the Sustainable International Development (SID) Graduate Program, with responsibility for contributing to the success of both programs. The Barer Institute and Sustainable International Development Graduate Program form UW Law’s center of excellence for students engaged in globally focused study and work with a public interest lens, especially in sustainable international development, human rights, environmental protection, responsible business, and indigenous rights. The Institute will be the focal point for students with interest in globally focused work that promotes service and the global common good.

     

    The Assistant Director/Graduate Program Specialist’s primary responsibility is to provide direct academic counseling to students and deliver programs to promote student life. Under the direction of the Executive Director of the Barer Institute and the leadership of the Sustainable International Development Graduate Program, the Assistant Director will provide career coaching and academic advising to Sustainable International Development graduate students and others engaged in globally focused study and work with a public interest lens. This includes providing coaching/advising sessions to students and alumni; developing, organizing, and facilitating, presentations, workshops, panels, and trainings related to professional development in sustainable international development, human rights, environmental protection, responsible business, and indigenous rights; engaging in strategic outreach and relationship-building with potential employers locally, nationally, and internationally.

     

    The position also provides budget planning, event planning, and outreach for the SID and Barer programs. The individual in this position represents the School of Law’s graduate programs, centers, and institutes across the UW campus and with external constituencies.

    POSITION COMPLEXITIES

    The position requires a compassionate, supportive, and mentor-focused disposition towards students. This position requires the ability to take initiative and use independent judgement to make decisions with respect to the programs. The individual works as part of team to carry out decisions relating to the Barer and Sustainable International Development programs and the Graduate Programs and Centers. The position is required to oversee event logistics, oversee program webpages and literature, a LinkedIn group to share professional opportunities with SID/Barer students and alumni, and assist with marketing and recruitment as necessary. This requires specialized knowledge about unique program requirements for admissions and graduation, requirements for international students, and University policies.

    POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY

    The Barer, SID and School of Law graduate programs are a complex enterprise that draw diverse students from around the globe. The Graduate Program Specialist plays an integral role in creating a positive experience for our current and prospective students and developing strategic partnerships with relevant professional contacts and organizations. The programs will several conferences and events that influence the law school’s reputation within the Washington legal community, the national and international legal and scholarly communities.

     

    **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Academic Advising: (40%)

    + Respond to inquiries during the admissions process and on-boarding of successful applicants. Coordinate with the Chair, Executive Director, and other UW Law staff members who work on graduate program admissions. Assist in selection of awards and scholarships for students.

    + Update literature summarizing quarterly course offerings for LLM students (both SID courses and bar qualifying courses) annually.

    + Advise students in relation to course selection, planning, and enrollment to assist them in designing their individual courses of study. Assist students with course registration.

    + Provide professional development support; help students with identifying and securing externships and internships.

    + Verify that students are meeting degree requirements and assist the Executive Director by monitoring and tracking student progress. Alert the Executive Director to issues of concern.

    + Serve as a point of contact for students in student life-related matters.Graduate Program Administration: (30%)

    + With the Executive Director, supervise the Program Coordinator in all aspects of onboarding and supporting the living activities of the Barer Fellows, including visa, travel, housing and stipend support; back up the Program Coordinator role in these areas as needed.

    + Develop a system for managing the SID program budget and, with input from the Executive Director, the Barer Institute’s budget and expenses.

    + Update and manage system for tracking student externships and internships and ensuring that Curricular Practical Training and Academic Training requirements are met and that advisor approvals are completed in a timely manner.

    + Further programs’ job placement capabilities and marketing strategies, including communication with other organizations regarding placement, on-campus interviewing, information sessions, and networking.

    + Work with SID/Barer team to update and oversee program webpages and literature, manage a LinkedIn group to share professional opportunities with SID/Barer students and alumni, prepare an annual alumni newsletter, and assist with marketing and recruitment as necessary.

    + Assist the Executive Director and Faculty Chair in curriculum implementation, including communication with part-time affiliates.

    + Collaborate and coordinate with graduate program faculty and UW Law staff to administer and advance the strategic goals of the graduate programs. Represent the mission and objectives of the graduate programs within and outside the UW community.Event Programming (20%)

    + Manage and organize conferences, presentations, speaker events, field events, trainings, panels and workshops for the Barer Institute and Sustainable International Development program.

    + Collaborate with Student and Career Services on training and programming related to professional development and career opportunities, on topics such as: goal-setting, strategic career planning, resumes, cover letters, networking, professional communication and etiquette and hiring trends.

    + Work with other graduate program staff to plan and execute orientation for incoming students. Assist with graduate programs, SID, and Barer Institute activities, including special events and year-end graduation-related activities.Other duties assigned (10%)

    + Assist with special colloquia, speaker visits, and other special events.

    + Participate in events and conferences with students for networking and educational enrichment; transport students to events and conferences.

    + Other duties as appropriate. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**

    + Law Degree (LL.M. or JD) or comparable graduate/doctoral level degree in sustainable international development or related discipline.

    + At least 3 years of demonstrated project/program management experience and some legal practice or equivalent experience. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**

    + Strong public speaking and presentation skills.

    + Demonstrated ability to work independently, problem solve, take initiative, and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively.

    + Ability to work independently and under pressure of frequent deadlines in fast-paced and changing environment.

    + Ability to build relationships and connect students with available resources to promote success.

    + Excellent oral and written communications skills, as well as experience using Microsoft Office Suite, LinkedIn. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**

    + Professional and/or lived experience in a low- or middle-income country.

    + Experience working with international students, particularly those from low- or middle-income countries.

    + Knowledge of the local, domestic, and international employment marketplace with respect to opportunities for LLM students seeking positions with legal dimensions in in sustainable international development, human rights, environmental protection, responsible business, and/or indigenous rights.

    + Familiarity with the areas of study and practice of the Sustainable International Development program and the Barer Institute.
