    Job Summary

    The Department of Surgery, Section of Thoracic Surgery is seeking a Clinical Research Technician / Assistant to help with recruitment and retention of study participants in a hospital and clinical setting. This includes working alongside and effectively communicating with nurses, physicians, and other hospital or clinical staff. The CRT will be responsible for research subject enrollment, screening potential research participants, following up with participants, and electronic data entry. The CRT will also be responsible for helping the Sections Project Manager manage day-to-day tasks.

    Responsibilities*

    Screen potential research projects. Approach potential research subjects, explain research protocol, and obtain patient consent. Perform phone calls to patients for screening, consent, and follow-up. Enter patient research data into an electronic data entry system. Coordinate the collection of specimens and monitor study subjects. Ensure integrity of specimens (collection, processing, storing, labeling, tracking, etc.). Assist project manager in the preparation of IRB amendments and scheduled continuing reviews, progress reports, safety reports and adverse event reports.

    Required Qualifications*

    Clinical Research Technician:

    + Associate degree in Health Science or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is necessary.

    + Minimum 1 year of directly related experience in clinical research and clinical trials is necessary. (Please review SoCRAs Definition of a Clinical Research Professional for qualifying experience prior to applying.) or An advanced degree in a health-related areas such as: Health Sciences, Behavioral Sciences, Public Health, Health Care Administration, Clinical Research Administration, Social Work, Psychology, Epidemiology, Foreign MD. or Minimum 3 years of human subject experience (clinical, lab or health regulations) such as related patient care, related community health and wellness, related clinical information, and research.

    Clinical Research Assistant

    + High school diploma or GED is necessary.

    Both:

    + Interest in clinical health research

    + Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

    + Superb interpersonal skills, comfortable speaking with healthcare providers and patients and working independently and as a member of a research team

    + Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in both verbal and written form

    + Ability to communicate research study details clearly over the phone

    Desired Qualifications*

    Clinical Research Technician:

    + Bachelors degree in Health Science or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is desirable. An understanding of medical terminology, experience in a large complex health care setting, ability to effectively communicate with staff and faculty of all levels, and knowledge of university policies and procedures is desirable.

    Clinical Research Assistant:

    + Associate Degree in Health Science or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is desirable.

    + An understanding of medical terminology, experience in a large complex health care setting, ability to effectively communicate with staff and faculty of all levels, and knowledge of university policies and procedures is desirable.

    Both:

    + High degree of comfort with smart phones and app installation

    + Familiarity with research ethics and principles of confidentiality

    + Understanding of medical terminology related to oncology

    + Some familiarity with REDCap, OnCore, Epic, MiCHART, and eResearch applications

     

    Work Schedule

     

    Monday through Friday, with occasional early mornings for biosample collection

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
