    General Summary

    The Edward M. Kennedy for Health Careers seeks a forward and student-focused leader to serve as the Manager of Climate and Culture . This role will assist in cultivating a positive school culture by working directly with the administrative team and teachers to develop effective school-based systems for teaching teams and student support. We seek to foster a proactive, welcoming, student-centered teaching and learning culture that will propel EMK's long-term growth toward becoming a school with thriving student achievement.

     

    Kennedy Academy is a Horace Mann In-District Charter High School. It is a college preparatory and vocational high school for Boston students exploring careers in health and health-related professions. The Academy provides a supportive learning environment that promotes respect and embraces diversity. Students will attain the life skills needed to become productive and positive members of society. Kennedy Academy is a great place for those seeking to work in an environment that supports their creativity and innovation and respects their leadership skills and abilities.

     

    In addition, over the next five years, Kennedy Academy will double in size, add new health career pathways, college courses, work-based learning, and offer graduates access to good-paying careers at Mass General Brigham thanks to Bloomberg Philanthropies' $38 million grant, which marks the largest philanthropic investment in BPS history.

     

    The Manager of Climate and Culture is a leader in fostering a positive school climate by implementing restorative justice practices, managing student behavior, and enhancing family engagement. This individual will work with students, staff, and families to promote conflict resolution, mediate disputes, and uphold consistent discipline standards while nurturing a collaborative and inclusive school culture. This position requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to creating a positive, restorative, and supportive school environment for all students.

     

    Reports to: School Leader

    Responsibilities:

    Restorative Justice, Circle Practice, and Mediation

     

    + Lead students and staff in Circle Practice/Restorative Justice practices school-wide.

    + Facilitate mediations between students and between students and adults.

     

    Student Behavior and Discipline Management

     

    + Manage and align the school community on school culture expectations including interventions, discipline, and incentives.

    + Supervise the consistent and fair administration of school policies regarding student conduct and discipline.

    + Handle disciplinary infractions, including classroom disturbances, suspension procedures, and hearings.

     

    Family and Community Engagement

     

    + Establish and maintain contact with parents/guardians to ensure student success.

    + Coordinate and oversee family meetings related to student attendance, behavior, and discipline.

    + Strengthen and engage families as partners in planning and problem-solving.

    + Facilitate parent education and involvement in school culture policies.

     

    Student Support and Development

     

    + Develop and maintain a positive behavior system for students who need to step out of class temporarily.

    + Implement disciplinary policies and procedures, including family communication and coordination of hearings.

    + Support students through de-escalation when needed.

     

    Professional Development and Staff Support

     

    + Model professional behaviors and contribute to school-wide development.

    + Facilitate professional development for teachers and paras on restorative justice/circle practice and effective classroom management.

    + Assist with the evaluation of non-instructional and support staff.

     

    Operational Management and School Safety

     

    + Support with ensuring safety and security of school hallways, classrooms, and school grounds.

    + Work with staff to develop and implement safety protocols and handbooks.

    + Work with appropriate staff to create and distribute school safety plans.

    + Manage in-school suspension protocols and classrooms.

     

    School Climate and Culture

     

    + Drive the creation and maintenance of school operational systems to support a positive school climate.

    + Supervise the implementation of school-wide support and outreach programs.

    + Develop a system for measuring school climate and culture improvements, including discipline and attendance data.

    + Coordinate a multi-tiered system of social and emotional supports for students and families.

     

    Data Management and Reporting

     

    + Maintain data entry into SIS and other databases.

    + Maintaining accurate school discipline records for students, including collecting culture/discipline referrals from staff and delivering prompt follow-through.

    + Analyze, track, and report behavioral data to monitor student social-emotional development.

    + Create and analyze climate surveys for students and teachers.

     

    School-Wide Events and Activities

     

    + Attend field trips and community events as assigned.

    + Support planning and facilitation of school-based events.

    + Participate in the creation and execution of after-school academic programs to improve student outcomes.

    + Coordinate and oversee school-wide student activities and events.

     

    Other

     

    + Perform other duties requested by the School Leader or Administrative Team.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

    + 3-5 years experience in urban school school system working with a diverse ethnic student body

    + Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

    + Strong written and oral communication skills

    + Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Google Drive Suite

    + Comfort and familiarity with student information databases (Aspen, SIS, etc)

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Master’s degree in a related field

    + Fluency in a language other than English (preferably Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, or Vietnamese)

EMK has a longer school day through the "Schedule A" Expanded Learning Time (ELT) Agreement. The employee will be required to adhere to the work conditions, including calendar, schedule, and flexibility established by the School. Common planning time, program, department and committee meetings, and professional development occur on Wednesdays, generally between 2pm- 4pm.
