    Duties Description The Law Enforcement Strategic Assistance Unit (LESAU) provides hands-on strategic guidance to New York State law enforcement agencies focusing on evidence-based policing practices, community trust building, and violence prevention initiatives. Under the direction of a higher-level Public Safety Program Specialist within the DCJS Office of Public Safety, LESAU’s Field Operations Section, the Public Safety Program Specialist 2, SG-23 will supervise Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) Initiative Field Operations. GIVE provides direct funding and strategic guidance to law enforcement jurisdictions in implementing the core elements of identified evidence-based strategies to effectively implement and innovate in pursuit of effective violence reduction and public safety outcomes. This position provides day-to-day coordination, management support, and direct supervision of Field Advisors providing technical assistance to GIVE sites. The PSPS2 will ensure coordination with local, state and federal law enforcement, crime analysts, district attorneys, sheriffs, probation departments, and street outreach partners towards achieving the established goals of reducing gun involved violence and violent crime. The incumbent may also supervise Public Safety Program Specialist 1, paraprofessional staff, and support staff. Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:• Provide day-to-day coordination and supervision of (GIVE) operations including project management and field advisor support.• Assist in the programmatic development of (GIVE) grant, operational guidelines, and stakeholder coordination. • Ensure implementation of evidence-based GIVE violence reduction strategies. • Manage and maintain strong working relationships with a broad set of stakeholders, including local, state and federal law enforcement, crime analysis, district attorney, sheriff, probation, and street outreach partners.• Assist with the management of program goals and objectives that operationalize the GIVE plan.• Work with project partners to communicate the purpose, mission, and outcomes of GIVE to the community.• Work with subject matter experts and technical assistance providers for hands-on support of key project components, including law enforcement and community stakeholders.• Provide project updates and maintain project uniformity and integrity. • Identify program challenges and propose solutions. • Document major program activities, including maintenance of meeting minutes, contact information, and activity reports.• Assist in identifying and coordinating the facilitation of appropriate training and technical assistance as required.• Prepare written reports, including monthly activity reports; quarterly progress reports; time and effort reports; and special reports, as requested.• Act as liaison between DCJS and local partners regarding (GIVE).• Evaluate applications and funding requests.• Brief executive staff regarding (GIVE) activities.• Prepare and submit program budget recommendations.• Review and analyze criminal justice policy, programs, legislation, and research studies.• May supervise professional and paraprofessional training staff and/or support staff.• Handle special assignments/projects as assigned as directed by supervisor.• Promote the Governor’s criminal justice initiatives and services of DCJS to local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies.

     

    Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: Seven years of qualifying experience as a law enforcement officer or law enforcement trainer in a local, state, or federal agency. All qualifying experience must have been gained after basic/recruit training. An associate degree or 60 credit hours may substitute for two years of experience; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for four years of experience.
