DENTAL ASSISTANT:
Handles and tends dental instruments at chair-side as directed by the Dentist and as prescribed in guidelines in order to assist the Dentist in performing dental treatment procedures.
Typical activities, tasks, and assignments:
1. Schedules and confirms appointments.
2. Seats and prepares patient.
3. Notes treatments prescribed and scheduled for appointment periods and prepares work area by laying out needed materials and required instruments in proper array.
4. Takes intra-oral and extra-oral x-rays digital by positioning patients by operating x-ray equipment in order to provide the Dentist with information useful in diagnosis and treatment.
5. During the performance of treatment procedures, stays by the Dentist at chair-side and anticipates the Dentist's needs by handing the appropriate instruments as instructed.
6. At point-of-use, conducts visual examination of sterilized instrument packages, and inspects for signs of condensation, moisture, mold, or other contaminants.
7. Reprocesses instruments if above findings are present at point-of-use.
8. During the performance of treatment procedures, anticipates the Dentist's needs for dental materials, prepares these materials using standard procedures, timing the preparation to meet treatment needs, and bringing these materials to chair-side for use by the Dentist.
9. Prepares restorative materials as directed. Mixes impression materials and loads the trays as directed.
10. Pours up dental impression materials as directed by dentist.
11. Continually observes patient's general condition during all phases of dentistry performed.
12. Charts existing dental conditions during annual and new admission appointments, and charts treatment planned procedures to be performed. This is charted using the Open Dental electronic record.
13. Cleans the operatory after use.
14. Maintains cleanliness of laboratory.
15. Handles laboratory cases (send and receive).
16. Maintains dental equipment as directed (Cleans and maintains autoclave; treats dental unit water lines; flushes and disinfects suction lines, cleans autoclave, etc.)
17. Aids the Dental Director in maintaining clinic records (water testing,
18. amalgam recycling, equipment repair and preventive maintenance, etc.) 19. Cleans and sterilizes dirty instruments and handpieces.
20. Maintains all logs including Hydrim maintenance, temperature, biological indicator spore testing, autoclave tracking
21. Operates autoclave and other equipment in order to sterilize instruments.
22. Inventories packages and cartons of dental supplies and materials and is actively involved in dental supply organization and inventory.
23. Disposes of used materials and removes and replaces soiled materials and other supplies.
24. Performs a variety of light housekeeping tasks in order to maintain a clean, organized and presentable dental clinic. May clean, dust, and polish fixtures and furniture in the dental facility.
25. Performs any other related jobs as assigned by the Dental Director.
