    *General Description:*

     

    This position serves as the Director of the Veteran Mental Health Program for the Texas Veterans Commission which connects veterans and their families to local, state and federal resources. Directs and coordinates services and provides training to peer service coordinators; community-based licensed mental health professionals and organizations; faith-based organizations; and justice involved veterans.

    *Essential Duties and Responsibilities:*

    • Coordinate services and provide training to the following: peer service coordinators; community-based licensed mental health professional and organizations, faith-based organizations; and justice involved veterans.

    • Coordinating and providing directions of a statewide mental health program for veterans and their families.

    • Plans, directs and supervises the operations of the Veteran Mental Health Department.

    • Establishes goals and objectives; develops and approves schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving goals; and manages evaluation activities.

    • Oversees the preparation of management and productivity reports and studies.

    • Oversees special investigations, research studies, and internal audits.

    • Develops and implements techniques for evaluating department activities.

    • Develops and evaluates budget requests, monitors budget expenditures, and makes adjustments as necessary.

    • Plans, implements, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates policies and procedures and monitors compliance with policies and procedures.

    • Identifies areas of needed change and makes recommendations to improve operations.

    • Provides technical guidance for the department.

    • Represents the department at meetings, hearings, trials, conferences, and seminars or on boards, panels, and committees.

    • Manages staff development plans and activities.

    • Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of others.

    • General personal computer experience/Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

    • Travel is required for work-related functions.

    • Performs related work as assigned.

    *Minimum Education:*

     

    Master’s degree from an accredited university with major course work in mental health, psychology or psychiatric or a related field.*College Transcripts are required and must be provided before an interview can be extended, it is preferred they be attached to the application.*

    *Minimum Experience:*

     

    Minimum of three (3) years’ postgraduate experience in one of the following fields: human services working with community mental health center, chemical dependency rehabilitation center, or residential treatment facility including experience in providing trauma-informed care. Director must have State of Texas license to practice as a mental health professional in Texas.

     

    *Additional Requirements:*

    • Applicants will be required to provide a presentation. Please allow for an additional 20 minutes in interview.

    • State of Texas license to practice as a mental health professional in Texas.

    • A valid Texas Driver’s License must be provided within 90 days of hire.

    *Preferred Qualifications:*

    • Candidate with at least two years of trauma-informed care.

    • Candidate has experience working with the Military and/or veteran population.

    • Honorably discharged Veteran with combat service is strongly preferred.

    *Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:*

    • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations relevant to program areas.

    • Knowledge of principles and practices of public administration and management.

    • Ability to direct and organize program activities.

    • Ability to establish program goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.

    • Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions.

    • Ability to develop and evaluate policies and procedures.

    • Ability to prepare reports and meet required deadlines.

    • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

    • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others.

    *Environmental & Physical Conditions: *

    Normal office work environment, mostly sedentary in nature. May involve walking; standing; remaining stationary for long periods of time; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Work involves extensive telephone usage and repetitive hand/wrist/finger motions while using the computer.
