United Therapeutics (Nasdaq: UTHR) seeks to travel down the corridors of indifference to develop treatments for rare, deadly diseases. We were founded in 1996 by a family seeking a cure for their daughter’s pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Today, we have six FDA-approved therapies that treat PAH, pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) and neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer. Our near-term pipeline seeks to develop additional therapies for PAH and pulmonary fibrosis (PF).
The cure for end-stage life-threatening diseases like PAH, PH-ILD, PF, and many others is an organ transplant, but only a small percentage of donated organs are available to address the vast need. For this reason, we are working to create manufactured organs to address the shortage of kidneys, hearts, lungs, and livers available for transplant. We believe an unlimited supply of tolerable, transplantable organs will eliminate the transplant waiting list and cure end-stage organ diseases for which transplant is not currently an option.
Who You Are
Are you looking for a Monday - Friday nursing role with normal business hours and no on call? Our Operating Room Scrub Nurse will play a critical role in supporting surgical procedures involving the removal of animal organs for the purpose of human transplantation (xenotransplantation).
This role will work directly with and collaborate with surgeons and other operating room (OR) staff to create and maintain a safe, sterile and efficient surgical environment. This role will be responsible for the OR setup and equipment sterilization to ensure that the room is ready for efficient use. The Scrub Nurse will be part of our growing Xenograft procurement team serving an unmet medical need in the critical end-stage organ transplant world. They will use the training and skills they have learned in the human transplant world and directly apply them to a surgical setting to procure Xenografts for direct human transplant. This role is essential in advancing cutting-edge biomedical research and transplantation science.
+ Communicate and collaborate seamlessly with surgeons and the operating room team to maintain a safe, efficient, and positive surgical environment, and ensure successful operations. Anticipate the surgeon's needs, respond quickly to requests, and collaborate on patient care.
+ Assist with OR setup and ensure surgical instruments, supplies and equipment are sterilized and arranged according to procedural protocols. Manage surgical tools, and follow all company protocols, standards, policies and procedures (SOPs) to maintain procedural efficiency and safety throughout the operation to ensure a smooth and productive surgical operation.
+ Select and pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon(s), and ensure the surgical field remains sterile. Monitor and maintain strict adherence to aseptic techniques to prevent contamination.
+ Provide comprehensive care to (animal) patients before and after surgery, ensuring ethical treatment and minimizing discomfort. Monitor patient vitals and well-being before, during, and after surgery.
+ Administer medications and treatments to patients, including performing euthanasia, as directed by physicians, ensuring the highest standards of care
+ Collect medical samples during procedures
+ Follow sterilization procedures as required for self (washing hands and arms, wearing gloves, etc.)
+ Maintain detailed documentation and notes regarding patients and procedures, using site specific software
+ Collaborate with veterinary staff and researchers to understand the specific anatomical and procedural requirements of the patient
+ Learn, train and stay current with developments in xenotransplantation, surgical best practices, and animal care regulations
+ Consider potential complications that may occur during surgeries, and create a plan of action
+ Assist in the cleaning and restocking of the operating room following surgery
+ Perform any additional tasks as needed to support the xenotransplant program and ensure its success
+ Perform all other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
+ Education and Experience required:
+ 4+ years of nursing experience with an associate degree, or
+ 2+ years of nursing experience with a bachelor's degree
+ 2+ years of operating room nursing experience
+ RN - Registered Nurse - Active State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure
+ BCLS - Basic Life Support
+ ACLS Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support
+ Advanced knowledge of sterile technique, surgical instrumentation and willingness to learn animal anatomy and animal care techniques
+ Must not have any other interaction with pigs outside of the company
+ Physical Demand: Lift 75 lbs to waist level
+ Physical Demand: Push/Pull 200 lbs on wheels
Preferred Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree in nursing
+ 1+ years of transplant operating room nursing experience
+ Neurosurgical experience a strong plus
Job Location & Travel
This position is located at our Christiansburg, VA facility and may travel up to 10%.
