    Budget Title: Associate Vice President (*Management Confidential)

     

    Salary: $225,000 - $275,000

     

    The Chief Financial and Operating Officer of the Binghamton University Foundation and Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations in the Division of Advancement will join a devoted team with decades of institutional involvement and a positive culture set for growth. The CFO-COO and AVP will report to the Vice President for Advancement for the University / Executive Director of the Binghamton University Foundation. Reporting to the CFO-COO will be a team of approximately 15 staff members including the Gift and Donor Records Team; Information Technology Team; Accounting Services Team; and Constituent Relations Manager. The AVP will participate in agency policy formulation.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Organizational Leadership & Management

     

    The Chief Financial and Operating Officer and Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations will

     

    + partner with leadership in the development, articulation, and implementation of Advancement's and the Foundation's strategic plans and goals;

    + advise leadership on matters of critical importance to Advancement and the Foundation, including their financial health, advancement goals, and key organizational initiatives;

    + assess organizational risks and implement appropriate mitigation strategies, policies, and processes;

    + provide leadership, supervision, and development of team members, fostering a shared vision, acting as role model, and demonstrating the University's and the Foundation's values;

    + oversee relationships with legal, banking, audit, and insurance professionals;

    + set guidelines and standards to measure the Foundation's performance;

    + manage contracts, including serving as signatory and ensuring compliance and performance;

    + manage key relationships with board members and other volunteer leaders as well as related entities to advance the Foundation and the University; and

    + represent Advancement and the Foundation in engagements with various stakeholders, including donors and community members and leaders and assist advancement professionals in engaging with alumni and donors.

     

    Investments Management

     

    The Chief Financial and Operating Officer and Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations will

     

    + administer the $250+ million endowment and the $150+ million short-term Treasury portfolio for donor advised funds in accordance with policies established by the Board Investment Committee;

    + make recommendations on the annual spending rate to the Foundation's Investment Committee based on endowment shares calculation;

    + oversee cash management and approve capital calls for the investment portfolio; and

    + provide oversight of, and coordinate with, investment advisors and consultants as directed by the Investment Committee.

     

    Financial Planning, Reporting & Controls

     

    The Chief Financial and Operating Officer and Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations will

     

    + lead the development and implementation of financial strategies aligned with Advancement's and the Foundation's missions and goals;

    + provide financial insights and projections to support strategic decision-making and gifts stewardship;

    + direct accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting activities;

    + oversee reporting processes and systems, and implement appropriate systems, procedures, and policies for internal controls;

    + serve as in-house financial compliance expert and ensure compliance with applicable policies, standards, and regulations;

    + track endowment gifts and ensure restricted funds are appropriately used, gifts are processed and receipted in a timely manner, pledges are appropriately documented, and adherence to IRS and CASE standards is observed;

    + oversee the annual audit process and coordinate audit activities with external auditors and the Board Audit Committee; and

    + prepare or oversee the preparation of various reports and filings, including IRS tax filings and the annual state allocation request for the University business office, and review audited financials.

     

    Technology & Data Management

     

    The Chief Financial and Operating Officer and Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations will

     

    + work with the IT Director and team, provide leadership and oversight of the Foundation's technology infrastructure, data governance, cybersecurity, and financial systems; and

    + ensure that technology and data practices align with Board policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices for data use, classification, and security.

     

    Affiliates & Real Estate Management

     

    The Chief Financial and Operating Officer and Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations will

     

    + serve as CFO-COO for the Foundation's 19 affiliated entities formed to support the University;

    + oversee financial reporting and filings for the affiliated entities as well as the budget processes; and

    + provide administrative oversight over 40 properties held by the Foundation or its affiliates.

     

    Board of Directors

     

    The Chief Financial and Operating Officer and Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations will

     

    + engage regularly with the Foundation Board of Directors (the Board) including conducting new Board member orientation; assisting in the development of Committee and Board agendas; and preparing and presenting materials for Committee and Board meetings;

    + provide reports, analysis, and recommendations to support Board decision making on operational and financial matters;

    + liaise with the Board and Committee chairs to ensure proper Board and Committee governance and operation; and

    + prepare and present to the Board and Committees matters for approval, including the annual budget and election of Board members and officers.

    Binghamton University and the Binghamton University Foundation seek a Chief Financial and Operating Officer and Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations with:

    + a commitment to the mission of Binghamton University -- collaborative transdisciplinary research, inspirational artistic endeavors, and high-impact educational experiences within an environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion, international perspectives, and community engagement;

    + a finance background, including experience in a Chief Finance Officer or other senior finance role, preferably within a nonprofit, foundation, or higher education institution;

    + a demonstrated understanding of the role of finance and operations in strategy setting and the advancement of organizational goals;

    + an understanding of accounting principles and practices, with a track record of overseeing accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and audit readiness;

    + excellent written and oral communication skills, with an ability to translate complex financial information to non-financial audiences;

    + interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to develop effective cross-organizational relationships and influence and engage stakeholders, including senior leadership, staff, donors, board members, and external constituents and partners;

    + excellent analytic skills combined with a flexible mindset that supports the development of creative strategies and solutions;

    + sound judgement and integrity in resolving complex issues and an ability to gather and evaluate information, assess risk, develop solutions, and provide actionable recommendations;

    + knowledge of investment strategies and an ability to work with external investment managers and provide clear reporting on investment performance to leadership and the Board;

    + an ability to work with a highly engaged Board and to leverage the time, talent, and resources of the Board to further institutional priorities;

    + a demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams and a commitment to the mentoring and development of team members; and

    + an understanding of higher education foundation practices and charitable giving or the ability to acquire the skills needed to lead within a university foundation.

    Job Requirements:

    + Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field

    + At least 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in financial and operational/administrative management

    + Experience as a Chief Financial Officer or other senior finance role

    + Experience leading and developing teams

    Preferred:

    + Master's in Business Administration or Master's in Public Administration

    + Certified Public Accountant

    + Experience within a nonprofit, foundation or higher education institution
