Shift: Days/Evening (majority hours:8:30a-5:00p)
Every Other Weekend rotation required
Ability to work at the Inpatient Lab Services and travel to Outpatient Lab Sites
Position Function: Under the direct supervision of phlebotomy supervisor or designee, performs clerical, phlebotomy (all age/population groups), computer functions pertaining to ordering and collection, EKG, vitals, collection of blood specimens off site including nursing home patients, and other patient care duties in a patient care unit/area.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
1. Completes phlebotomy competency for all age/population groups.
2. Completes phlebotomy quiz for policy/procedure and proper specimen containers/tubes.
3. Completes Meditech computer competency.
4. Completes specimen accession competency, if applicable.
5. Attends departmental and hospital inservices and education programs without being constantly reminded.
6. Pleasantly participates in orientation of new employees. Makes them feel welcome and part of the team.
7. Willingly helps all co-workers in completing work assignments. Does not have to be told to check on other areas when there are sick calls.
8. Performs phlebotomy duties to include performing venipunctures and processing specimens, assuring proper specimen handling.
9. Responsible for performing clerical duties, including supply maintenance, patient short registrations and data entry as necessary.
10. Performs EKGs (Summit Health).
11. Performs vital signs as needed.
12. Performs other patient care duties as assigned.
13. Receives, reviews, performs and processes requisitions, specimens and other duties as assigned.
14. Communicates with nursing regarding status of patient assignments such as patient not available, hard stick, etc.
15. Demonstrates involvement in unit activities - team building.
16. Assesses workload and performs in a manner which facilitates swift and continual movement of clients through the assigned work area.
17. Reviews physician orders for tests. Is able to order lab tests with minimal errors and arranges work to outpatient's established time frames and special requests.
18. Supplies patients with the correct specimen containers and appropriate instructions.
19. Follows hospital/laboratory policies and procedures for proper and correct identification of patients, correct technique and proper labeling of specimens.
20. Uses established policies/procedures for collecting blood/non blood specimens and disposes of contaminated supplies and material following hospital/laboratory guidelines.
21. Restocks supplies in work area.
22. Can independently perform assigned duties after orientation period.
23. Understands and follows hospital fire and safety procedures; knows personal role in case of a fire.
Qualifications and Standards
Education: Formal education and training: Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program and/or graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program or the equivalent in relative experience; demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required. Informal or continuing education: Continuing education required as necessary to stay current.
Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. Proficiency in phlebotomy preferred; proficiency in EKG preferred; computer literacy and typing skills preferred.
Certifications/Licensure: Maintains current CPR certification. Must have valid driver's license in the current state of residence. Driving record must meet requirements established by WellSpan Risk Management.
