    TITLE:

    Senior Manager, Strategic Communications (Grant Funded)

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

    Vice President, Strategic Communications

    BASIC FUNCTIONS:

    Develop, implement, and manage rapid response strategies in support of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) vaccine communications work and in alignment with AAP’s overarching approach. Facilitate collaboration among external partners to craft impactful messages for diverse audiences in response to breaking news, crises, misinformation and other urgent communications.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Lead AAP’s newly launched vaccine communications rapid response hub, which includes directing day-to-day efforts to develop and disseminate real-time rapid response communications and leveraging external partnerships to advance the AAP’s voice on vaccine confidence and dispel misinformation and disinformation. Escalate high-impact matters to leadership. Establish rapid response operational policies and procedures.

    2. Craft messaging and/or customize turnkey materials from external partners to connect with diverse audiences, ensuring message content is evidence-based and aligns with vaccine confidence campaign goals and AAP communication strategy.

    3. Convene external partners facilitating frequent and ongoing meetings and coordinating exchange of information. Oversee work of external partners to ensure accountability in the completion of assigned deliverables and commitments and alignment with AAP’s vaccine communications goals.

    4. In consultation with external vendors, identify and capitalize on fast-moving opportunities to elevate AAP’s voice and drive key messages on priority issues.

    5. Keep informed of current events, media trends, political landscape, and emerging technologies to ensure AAP’s rapid response communications operations remain effective, responsive, and relevant. Drive continuous innovation and process improvements to advance rapid response capabilities in traditional and social media outlets.

    6. Serve as a key AAP point of contact during communications crises, helping to centralize information flow and coordinate communications efforts.

    7. Craft compelling and persuasive messages for various audiences, including content for coalition toolkits, talking points, and social media posts.

    8. Contribute to the overall AAP communications strategy, ensuring alignment with campaign and organizational goals and objectives.

    9. Manage assigned budgets, report on variances, and recommend opportunities to reduce expenditures.

    10. Develop, track, and analyze key metrics to measure success and progress towards established AAP and external partner goals. Identify trends and insights to inform future strategies and initiatives. Collaborate with supervisor and colleagues on the development of reports for AAP leadership and external partners.

    11. Attend team meetings and contribute to discussions on social media campaign strategies.

    12. Perform other duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION:

    Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required.

    EXPERIENCE:

    At least 5 years’ related experience in strategic communications, public relations, or political campaigns, including developing and driving rapid response communications strategies. Experience managing external agencies and working with external partners preferred. Capitol Hill or other policy experience a plus.

    ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

    Must be a strong writer and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, navigate a fast-paced work environment, work both independently and as part of a team, exercise good judgment, collaborate with various internal and external constituents, respond quickly to time-sensitive matters, take initiative, and contribute to fostering an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued and respected. Excellent verbal/written communication, interpersonal, diplomacy, project management, organization, analytical, and critical thinking skills required. Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office and the ability to learn and apply new technologies; experience with virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx, Teams) and document collaboration platforms (eg, SharePoint) preferred. Some travel and evening/work required, as well as the ability to be flexible with work schedule to accommodate physicians’ availability.

     

    A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $99,227.67 - $104,740.48. Compensation decisions take into account a wide range of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, skills, certifications, geographic location, business needs, and organizational policies. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer.     Hybrid work environment of 40% of work time in the office per month.
