    Cultural Resources Field Director – Full Time

     

    POWER Engineers, Member of WSP, seeks a Cultural Resources Field Director to join the Environmental team working in the Mid-Atlantic Area. The position will require a half fieldwork/ half desk work mix with the potential of extensive travel. This is a full-time position with opportunities to occasionally perform work throughout the United States. Our Eastern Cultural Resource Department is a fast-growing team of Archaeologists and Architectural Historians that is looking to expand our staff and develop talent across the region. Along with the qualifications listed below, we are looking for an outgoing and motivated individual who is seeking to improve or expand their skills as a Full-time Archaeologist helping to positively contribute to our team.

    Although we maintain offices in every major city across the region, this position can be successfully executed in Midwest region, ideally from the listed cities below:

    + Chicago, IL

    + Cincinnati, OH

    + Cleveland, Oh

    + Columbus, OH

    + Indianapolis, IN

     

    Roles and Responsibilities

     

    Field and desk work will be equal parts of the job with fieldwork, analysis, and final reporting being the primary focus of the position. Actual time in the field or office is subject to fluctuate depending on workload. The position also includes assistance with management of temporary staff and being responsive to client and project manager requests.

     

    • Directing cultural fieldwork including Phase I, II, and III archaeological and architectural history survey and investigations

    • Locating, analyzing, and recording archaeological and architectural resources within defined areas

    • Field data management and quality control

    • Managing temporary field and office cultural staff

    • Provide training to new staff, including field and laboratory staff

    • Communicating with principal investigators to execute archaeological and above ground cultural resource efforts

    • Assisting with the day-to-day management of complex projects

    • Preparing and writing reports and site forms

    • Land and right-of way agent coordination

    • Clean, photograph, and catalog archaeological artifacts

    • Cultural evaluative testing, site mitigation, and monitoring

    • Historical research, previously recorded resource file reviews

    • Pre-field preparation and logistics

    • Assist coordination with federal and state agencies and project stakeholders

    Required Education/Experience

    • A bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History or a related discipline (Special consideration will be given to those who hold a master’s degree)

    • Three or more (3+) years of experience within Cultural Resource Management or related fields as a archaeologist, field director, crew chief supervising Cultural Resource field investigations.

    • Ability to work independently, fully planning and executing personal assignments with minimal instruction

    • Knowledge of health and safety standards

    • Ability to work in harsh environments, and in varying weather conditions

    • Ability to successfully lead teams composed of diverse personalities

    • Ability to adapt to a flexible schedule on short notice

    • Willingness to sometimes work weekends during field surveys

    • Physically able to dig shovel tests for archaeological investigations and lift 50 pounds

    • Candidates may expect to be subject to client or project-specific formal background checks or drug test regimens

    • Strong research and writing skills

    • Qualified applicants should possess strong leadership, technical, and communication skills

    • Must possess a valid driver’s license

    Desired Skills/Experience

    • Experience as an archaeologist, crew chief, or field director supervising other team members or the survey as a whole

    • Experience in the American Midwest

    • Extensive knowledge and understanding of equipment, technology, and paperwork used in the recording and documentation of archaeological sites and artifacts in various states

    • Demonstrated experience in archaeological analysis and report writing

    • Ohio, Indiana, or surrounding midwestern state residency is preferred but not required

    • Knowledge or experience conducting architectural history surveys

    • Familiarity with digital data recordation and management.

    • Familiarity with Section 106 processes and NRHP eligibility criteria for cultural resources

    Base Salary Range: $21.00 - $35.00 per hour

     

    The range for this position is being displayed in compliance with all state and local regulations. Salaries are set based on a number of factors to include an individual's job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and education. This means that no two candidates are alike.
