Job Description
Manufacturing Controls Engineer
Travel:
This position will be based out of our facility in Springfield, MA (100% in-office/non-remote) with periodic travel required to support other Smith & Wesson facilities.
Scope of the Job:
The Manufacturing Controls Engineer will develop, test, and implement modern manufacturing equipment and processes into existing factories in accordance with product specifications and quality standards. The position will develop new manufacturing concepts based on the latest technologies, validate proof of concepts, and work with the manufacturing engineering team to implement these technologies into production. It will also collaborate with manufacturing launch of new or revised products to leverage advanced manufacturing methods. Priorities include cost reduction, quality improvement, problem resolution, project management and employee training.
Control Engineers are tasked with a variety of crucial duties that ensure the smooth operation of control systems and processes within a facility or organization. Their primary responsibilities include:
+ Designing and developing control systems and software to meet operational needs and project specifications.
+ Conducting system analysis to evaluate functionality and identifying areas for improvement.
+ Programming and configuring PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and other control interfaces to optimize performance.
+ Collaborating with other engineers, project managers, and clients to ensure systems integration and operability.
+ Testing and troubleshooting control components to ensure robustness and safety of the system.
+ Maintaining and upgrading existing control systems to enhance efficiency and longevity.
+ Providing support and training to other engineers and users on how to operate the newly implemented or modified systems.
+ Ensuring compliance with industry regulations and maintaining documentation of procedures and configurations.
+ Performing regular maintenance checks on control systems and affiliated machinery.
+ Designing algorithms and circuitry for new control systems.
+ Simulating control strategies to predict system behavior under different conditions.
+ Collaborating closely with quality assurance teams to align the final product with predetermined specifications.
+ Documenting processes and keeping accurate records for future reference and regulatory compliance.

Education and Experience:
+ Candidates must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or equivalent
+ 5+ years' experience in an automated or semi-automated manufacturing environment (preferably in the firearms industry)
+ Proven experience in a control engineering role, preferably within the industry-specific to Manufacturing.
+ Strong understanding of computer programming and software development related to automated control systems.
+ Exceptional customer service skills
Competencies and Skills:
+ Must have working command of the English language
+ Must be able to read, write and interpret the English language
+ Must be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing (verbal instructions, written memos and instructions)
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
+ Proficiency in Allen Bradley, Siemens, and Fanuc are required
Training Requirements:
+ Complete all necessary training as required by assigned department and position
+ Participate in and follow all company initiatives
+ Participate in continuous improvement projects (Kaizen events, 5S, etc.)
Physical Demands:
+ Must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, reach, twist
+ Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:
Within any of our facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting. Work environment is similar to most manufacturing and distribution operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting, continuous exposure to hot temperatures, may be humid, odors, dust, continuous exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards.
The following Personal Protective Equipment is required:
Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection required when on manufacturing floor
The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
