Founded in 1979, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is a center for innovation dedicated to advancing the field of gifted education through research on testing, programs, and other supports for advanced learners. On the premise that advanced learners come from every community and every demographic, we aim to understand and inform how these students need to be nurtured to achieve their full potential as learners and global citizens. CTY also runs in-person and online academic programs for bright learners in order to cultivate a community of advanced learners and connect students in and outside the classroom.
We are seeking an **_CTY Academic Dean_** to support the Online Experiences program during the busy summer season. The person in this role will focus on course supervision by overseeing the virtual classroom and monitoring casual instructors to ensure the quality of classroom instruction. The dean might also engage in supervision of course development by providing established deadlines for submitting lesson materials, as well as, providing guidance and support as part of the lesson review process. In this casual role, deans are expected to work 15 hours each week, for a period of 10 weeks from
June 2, 2025 to August 8, 2025.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
_Course Supervision_
+ Oversee, monitor, and ensure the quality of classroom instruction.
+ Assist with training, supervision, and monitoring of casual instructors.
+ Arrange substitute instructors as needed.
+ Review Final Evaluations.
+ Ensure that instructors address/report issues of academic honesty.
+ Communicate with instructors, parents, and students, regarding course content, student course placement, and other academic concerns.
+ Consult with instructional staff members and other appropriate personnel on issues related to teaching strategies, curricular concerns, etc.
+ Regularly observe each class during the session.
+ Conduct a formal observation for each new instructor, and as requested by the Senior Program Manager. Discuss observations, strengths, concerns, and suggestions with the instructor. Provide a written report of the class visit to the instructor.
+ Coach instructors having difficulty working with pedagogy, course content, and classroom management. Include the course supervisor as part of the discussion. Consult with the course supervisor prior to working with the instructor.
+ Collaborate with Academic Programs leaders, program managers, and operations teams to ensure the quality of the overall experience of the instructors, as well as the students.
_Course Development_
+ Provide guidance and support to instructors with regard to reviewing and utilizing any available materials information / curricular assets.
+ Establish deadlines with SME/Instructors.
+ Review each lesson plan (looks for pillars, ensures timeline is doable, content makes sense).
+ Review suggested new materials.
+ Act as a go-between for supplemental materials.
+ Communicate with instructors regularly and follow up to ensure instructors complete the materials request form by the established deadline.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Strong ability to navigate and build relationships in a dynamic, highly matrixed environment.
+ Strong written and oral communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university in education or related field.
+ Two years teaching, tutoring or related experience.
+ Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
+ At least two years Online teaching experience.
+ Two years supervisory experience.
