    This posting is intended to fill a total of (2) Transportation Worker II positions: 60021347 and 60021362. You only need to apply once to be considered for all positions. Position 60021362 is an anticipated vacancy.

     

    All recommended salaries are based on each applicant’s qualifying education and related experience in combination with the position’s budgeted salary. The maximum hiring range for this position is $51,743.

    This work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Union County. This work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Stanly County. This position will report to the Stanly County Maintenance Office. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

    + Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies

    + Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures

    + Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)

    + Experience in snow and ice removal operations

    + Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching

    Additional Expectations:

    Applicant will function under a variety of weather conditions and must have the ability to lift signs and operate truck. Applicant shall be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform assigned tasks. Applicant shall be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Applicant shall comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safe work environment. Worker shall possess ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signs and other control devices. Worker shall possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include, but not limited to, extreme cold and hot outside conditions. Worker shall possess the ability to work under conditions of exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy constructions. Safety toe shoes required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

     

    Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Necessary Special Requirements:

    Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
