This is a Hybrid role based out of our office in Loveland, Colorado. The Target Pay Range for this position is $110,000 - $135,000 annually. At Mars Science and Diagnostics, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.

The Counsel, North America is a commercial legal counsel for the North America Mars Science and Diagnostics business, reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, North America. The Counsel, North America will be primarily responsible for Mars Science and Diagnostics commercial contracting process and implementation.

The successful candidate will be a business-minded, practical, strategic, and proactive legal partner to Mars Science and Diagnostic’s Sales, Commercial and Marketing functions. Working in a highly collaborative manner with the broader Mars Science and Diagnostics and Mars Legal teams (e.g., Sustainability, Compliance, Marketing Properties, Intellectual Property, Corporate Development, and Privacy), the Counsel is accountable for delivering holistic legal support to grow the business, manage legal risks, and protect the Mars Science and Diagnostics brands and reputation, while ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable laws.

The preferred candidate will demonstrate sufficient maturity and experience with the required degree of integrity to be a trusted advisor to senior leaders and operate with a high degree of autonomy.

What are we looking for?

+ J.D. from an accredited law school with 2-5 years of legal experience required. Corporate, commercial, litigation and transaction experience in a well-respected law firm required. Experience in the legal department of a successful, complex, growth company preferred.

+ Broad-based legal experience supporting complex organizations, including drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements and managing litigation, with a solid foundational understanding of the relevant commercial laws.

+ Experience providing effective counsel to senior business leaders is preferred.

+ Creative, agile thinker with strong analytical skills and an entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented mindset to offer sound decisions and drive business growth objectives.

+ Strong business acumen. Capable of analyzing complex legal and policy issues from a commercial perspective.

+ Excellent relationship, interpersonal, and influencing skills.

+ Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects in parallel and prioritize as needed.

+ High degree of professional ethics, confidentiality, discretion, and integrity.

+ Must be a self-starter, highly motivated with a bias for action and able to function independently.

+ Strong, flexible team player and collaborator that works across and within diverse teams to meet both personal and organization goals.

+ Excellent written and oral communication skills.

+ Ability to travel if necessary.

+ Must be licensed to practice law in at least one US state.

What will be your key responsibilities?

+ Support North American commercial teams on strategic as well as a wide variety of day-to-day matters, including in sales and distribution, litigation, and other business transactions.

+ Utilize a business and strategic mindset to recommend legal solutions that unlock growth opportunities and meet core business objectives.

+ Effectively assess and balance risks and opportunities to manage risks intelligently and influence business decision-making.

+ Collaborate and partner with the regional and local cross-segment Legal counterparts across Mars, Incorporated to ensure a consistent and aligned “One Mars” approach on key matters and issues.

+ Effectively and efficiently manage outside counsel.
