GENERAL PURPOSE
The success of athletic programs has a direct impact on the public image of the Waverly- Shell Rock Community School District. With high community involvement and expectations, coaches must balance a competitive spirit with the district’s core values of sportsmanship, student well-being, and character development. While performance is publicly visible, the ultimate goal of the athletic program is to build student-athletes of high character, strong mental health, and academic commitment. This role may involve extended hours, injury risk management, and decision-making under pressure. Coaches are expected to apply sound judgment and common sense when situations arise that fall outside explicit policies.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Program & Policy Implementation
- Understands and enforces all athletic policies approved by the WSR Board of Education.
- Applies district, state (IHSAA/IGHSAU), and conference regulations consistently across the program.
- Follows proper administrative channels for communication, concerns, and grievance resolution.
- Attends relevant department, district, and league meetings.
Staff Leadership
- Establishes a program-wide philosophy, teaching progression, and culture of accountability.
- Guides and mentors assistant coaches, promotes professional development (clinics, certifications).
- Delegates responsibilities, monitors implementation, and evaluates staff at season’s end.
- Maintains high morale and cooperation within the coaching staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or building administration. Administrative Duties
- Assists the Athletic Director with scheduling, transportation, and tournament logistics.
- Coordinates facility use with custodial and maintenance staff.
- Collects and verifies physicals, consent forms, and eligibility documentation per state rules.
- Maintains safe equipment and facility standards.
- Provides timely feedback and recommendations for program improvements.
Student-Athlete Support
- Serves as a mentor and role model promoting respect, effort, and integrity.
- Monitors academic progress and behavioral expectations of athletes.
- Maintains a visible and supportive presence at all practices, contests, and travel.
- Distributes training rules, program expectations, and emergency procedures.
- Reports injuries and submits documentation within 24 hours.
- Directs and supervises team managers, statisticians, and support staff.
- Follows due process in disciplinary matters and communicates proactively with families.
- Assists student-athletes with post-secondary athletic and academic opportunities.
Finance & Equipment Oversight
- Collaborates on annual budgeting needs with the Athletic Director.
- Maintains inventory and accountability for all team equipment.
- Issues, labels, stores, and reconditions equipment in a timely and organized manner.
- Monitors access to locker rooms, equipment rooms, and coaches’ offices.
- Inspects facilities pre- and post-event for safety and cleanliness.
- Encourages student respect for school property and personal responsibility for equipment.
- Secures school property (lights, doors, windows) when custodians are not on site.
Public & Community Relations
- Organizes preseason parent/player meetings.
- Promotes the program within the school and community, encouraging multi-sport participation.
- Manages communication with media regarding team performance, schedules, and results.
- Supports positive relationships with booster clubs, youth programs, parents, and officials.
- Helps develop feeder systems in cooperation with community leagues and middle school coaches.
- Upholds the district’s expectations of respectful and responsible use of social media.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Iowa Coaching Authorization or Coaching Endorsement (BOEE)
- Current certifications: CPR/AED, Concussion in Sports, Heat Illness Prevention
- Strong knowledge of sport-specific rules, techniques, and strategy
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities
- Understanding of Iowa high school eligibility and safety requirements
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Teaching license or employment in WSR district
- Previous successful coaching experience, especially at the high school level
- Ability to positively engage with a diverse student population and community
